Isolation Switch Puma Starter Motor AMP Question
Hello All

Q...What AMPs are drawn by the Starter Motor on a PUMA Engine... Question

Reason for asking is that I'm getting round to adding a few (more) Security Layers
one of which is the installation of an Isolation Switch.

Often described as a 'Battery Isolation Switch', I'm considering the various
options for incorporating one (beyond a cleaver tamper-proof location on the vehicle).

One approach could be to Isolate only the Power Feed to the Starter Motor,
(thereby maintaining the Power Feed from the Battery (underneath front passenger seat)
to the Main Fuse Box (under drivers seat) and its distribution on-wards to the ECU
/ Alarm (etc)... I'm modifying this cable as well due to the inside...outside...inside route this
'vital' cable currently takes... Exclamation )

Exploring the Isolator Switch Options, I see that the Starter Motor Feed is clearly identified... Thumbs Up
and the cable initiates from the + Battery Terminal via a 500AMP Mega Fuse (see below)
clamping to the Mega Fuse with a M8 Stud.

I have (or are getting soon) a Durite Security Battery Isolator Switch
with a description of being rated at '100A @ 24V, 500A for 5 secs'.
(also using M8 cable fixing studs)

So my question is what AMPs are drawn by the Starter Motor on a PUMA Engine when starting
and therefore is this Isolator Switch up to the job, if I go down the route of targeting the Starter Motor... Question

Who knows their electrickery... observations welcome, (including alternative routes / options)

Rather than putting it cutting off the starter, why not just stop the control circuits?
It will quite happily run without the starter (you can bump start it) but it won't run without the computers.

Thanks Cupboard...how do I identity the power feed to 'the computers' / (assume ECU) is this a wise approach? and a completely separate system to the OEM Alarm, thanks again... SKIP

I wouldn't bother with the starter motor. I'd go for killing the fuel pump. You would only need a small switch then which is much easier to conceal and everything would appear normal except it wouldn't fire up. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r

Won't work on the 2.4 puma as no lift pump fitted.

Interrupt the switched supply to the engine ECU or you could consider isolating the injectors although this would be more work to conceal the additional wiring.

Or the crankshaft or camshaft position sensors.

On mine there's a big cable for the starter and a medium sized cable for everything else. At least that's what I remember.

Thanks for this feedback

Q Has anyone added an Isolation Switch to a PUMA tdci, to prevent it from Starting... Question

(but maintaining all 'essential' systems Alarm / Central Locking / and permanent lives (Tracker)
and possibly other 'aspects' that should not be Isolated...)

There are a number of threads on D2N discussing Battery Isolation Switches, and various
ideas are explored, a few have asked 'similar' questions...but most threads fizzle out...

Has anyone actually done this...on a PUMA... Question

Happy to receive a PM if you would prefer... Cool

Thanks SKIP

Hi Cupboard

You are right the RED Cable is direct to the Starter (Bottom of Picture)
The Black Shielded Cable (Brown inside) supplies the Main Fuse Box (Right of Picture)
The Black Cable (Left of Picture) is my additional 13 PIN Electrical Feed for Towing

I don't think upstream of the Main Fuse Box (under drivers seat) you Isolate this wire...nothing will work,
down stream maybe, keeping essential features alive (Alarm etc)... I'v posted a question (above) to try and see who knows what...
