Thanks! Unfortunately I'm not totally convinced about the new look with the tacho and would rather keep the clock for a bit just in case I want to revert to the original look.

I did notice this one on ebay the other day if it's of interest: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322486983377

You'll be the first to know if I decide I don't need it anymore! Thumbs Up Matt.

Really surprised with the sound proofing!! It's made a massive difference, I'd go as far to say it's the best £30 I've spent on it so far! We were able to listen to music at a reasonable level and also talk to each other without raising our voices.

Just goes to show you don't always have to go with the expensive brands! Very Happy Very Happy

Highly recommended job for old Tdis which have virtually no sound deadening. Thumbs Up Matt.

I really fancy a nice metal storage box up against the bulkhead, Barebox do a nice one at a reasonable price. The issue is I currently have full length bench seats in the back.

So I was thinking of replacing the bench seats with inward facing fold up seats, one on either side, leaving space at the front for the storage chest.

Any thoughts with regards to mounting points, insurance etc are very welcome! Thumbs Up

PS - If anyone has any spare fold up seats knocking around I'd be interested to hear from you. Matt.

Nice looking landy that! Do you have the link to the sound deadening on eBay? As it is I have to have the radio near full volume to hear it! 1995 300TDi Hardtop Nato Green

Made a few changes in the last few months:

Firstly, a nice shiny steering guard from Paddocks:

Also fitted my Kenwood Active Sub on the back of the cubby box. Sounds incredible, not just the bass, but seems to make the music somehow more audible. When I just had the 4 speakers the sound just got drowned out by the engine. I can't seem to find the pictures I took however...

Then I replaced the leaky leak-off pipes and did a full service. Glad to see the oil was free of sludge/grime etc. Fuel filter was a pain to get off because of its placement in the engine bay which is non-standard due to the Disco 300tdi conversion.

New leak-offs:

I'd been having some cooling woes recently, or at least, so I thought. On a short 5 mile journey into town, the temp gauge was reading well into and over 100C. When we pulled over, I got an IR thermometer on the thermostat housing and I couldn't get it to read more than 80 odd degrees, also the rad didn't feel abnormally warm either. The only potential symptom of over heating is the expansion tank leaking.

I replaced the expansion tank:

Secondly I replaced the water temperature sender with the Defender one (black ring) to match my defender temp gauge.

I haven't yet had chance to test the gauge but I'm hopeful it will now read a normal temperature as I'm coming to think I never had an overheating problem in the first place.

On the subject of gauges, I decided to replace the clock with a rev counter. Very easy installation, just ran a cable from the W terminal on my alternator. I would have rather had a more factory fit looking dial but the genuine one was way over £300. However, it is nice to know the revs.

can you tell me where you got your replacement gauges and rev counter from? two of them seem to have a problem, ( see my thread in electrical section) plus i want to move the clock from the dash pod. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Hi,

The temperature gauge I was very fortunate to find at the LRO show last September for a fiver! Otherwise they seem to be around £50 on eBay Shocked It might be worth putting a wanted ad out, see if anyone has one lying around. LR shows with second hand stores are great for picking up these sort of parts cheap, so if you can wait for the next show, it would be worth a visit see if you can get what you need.

The rev counter I bought off eBay, link here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/391728050589?_tr...EBIDX%3AIT . There is a genuine LR gauge but it's very expensive.

I just took the clock out, and shuffled the gauges around until I had them in the order I wanted (seemed logical to me to have the rev counter next to the speedo). Installation was surprisingly easy, just needed to run a cable from the back of the alternator, through the bulkhead and into the dash area. I also had to find another ignition live because the clock is on a permanent live.

Hope this helps! Thumbs Up Matt.

cheers for the heads up on that one! I would have just swopped if over! I might be able to re route the live for the clock.
Running a wire to the alternator is no bother at all, I might even wire in some extra gauges too, so that I can move the radio system to the roof area, Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

A new day, a new problem... Routine trip into town for some shopping, parked up, came out of the supermarket to find a puddle of water under the engine. Big Cry The rad has sprung a leak. Luckily we had enough water to make it home.

Further inspection seems to indicate the hole is where the electric fan has been mounted to the rad.

Can anyone recommend a good source for a replacement rad? Also I'm going to have to make up a bracket to mount the fan on.

Beginning to worry the Defender simply isn't going to be reliable enough for daily use... Matt.

Hang in there mate!

Any car with that sort of mileage can spring a leak in the rad.

Lots of options for replacements and its a pretty straightforward job to swap Thumbs Up
