Securing headlining to sunroof surround...
Hi all,

I'm about to retrim my 90 headlining. The current headlining is a bit tatty and droopy in places. As you can see in the pics, it is not currently secured around the sunroof. Is it missing something? Or is this not a standard/factory sunroof? I was going to try and see if I can rivet to holes in the ally strip.

Any other ideas gratefully received.

Thanks

That doesn't look like a genuine sun roof to me. There should be an ally channel around the sunroof that a felt/rubber trim strip sits in and fills the hole between the roof lining and the sunroof frame.

Look genuine to me though an early model. The part you need is part number ALR2386 retaining Clip (item 9 in the picture). This attaches to the sun roof and clips the headlining in place you then just fix the rubber seal back and the job is a good one.

Have you got the rubber seal part number STC748 Seal as it is not pictured in you photos, as that also helps to keep the headlining from sagging round the sunroof.

On looking now, I think it is genuine (it even has a Land Rover badge on it...)

Nope, I don't have the rubber seal. Presumably this sits over the clips and finishes it off nice and neat?!?

At £80 - I think i'll find another way of trying it up Smile

Updated part STC748 has been superseded by STC4655

Thank you, going to order some clips now...

Try ringing around some Land Rover scrap dealers I am sure you could pick one up cheap from them alternatively try this one on eBay half the price.

Ok, I got the wrong end of the stick.

I thought you were asking about rubber seal item number 8 on picture above? The bay link there is for item number 3?

Am I just being thick (not unknown)

No sorry it’s me that’s being thick, and trying to do two things at once always a msitake Embarassed I looked at that page on my phone after putting in the part number and that item came up so just thought it was the right part, it is not, sorry.
If you can source the seal I gave the part number for it really does neaten everything up and as I said also helps to keep the headlining in place. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Will keep an eye out and ring round some scrappies

Cheers

Recovering the head lining is a job I am just doing on my old ninety (1989)
I have removed the headlining now but it was held around the sunroof by 4 triangle plates with self tappers
Then a plastic surround trim covers it all up,

I'll try and get some pics if it helps?

Excellent, thank you very much for going out of your way. I'll get some plates made up and do exactly that I imagine. Just need something to clip over the top to smarten it up now.

Hows the restoration of the headlining going? I've just got some black 'stretchy' speaker/sub carpet. Any advice?

Smile

Hello huffhuff

Definitely a genuine Land Rover Sunroof , my (now sold) 1994 300tdi had this version fitted.

I resealed it after 15 years use, as it had just started to leak (very slightly) the 'cosmetic' seal
remained in good order, the 'clips' beneath need to be 'closed' up a touch to grip the headlining
but overall doable.

My vinyl headlining also needed some 'reapplying' as LR just didn't use either enough
or good enough adhesive around this time...

Anyway the seal is the way to go to finish yours off...

Hi huffhuff

I agree... Thumbs Up

There may be a salvage route and just possibly an alternative rubber extrusion out there... but this seal is formed and molded to take up the corners, hinge positions and size required, this isn't a straight piece of rubber that you 'encourage' into the shape needed.

Apart from the basic vehicle (which we love) the 3 things I couldn't live without are
1. Sat Nav
2. Smaller Steering Wheel (Startech)
3. Sunroof

For me this would be worth getting right, I wouldn't want to drive around with a bodge above my head... Exclamation
(not that i'm saying that's where your heading)

Good Luck... SKIP
