Centrifugal oil filter help
So I just checked my TD5 centrifugal oil filter as part of a service and found that one of the bolts has sheared of all threads in the housing, so it is only held in place with one filter.... Any ideas on remedying this?? A Defender... Mans best friend, never judges, trustworthy (most of the time), go anywhere, do anything, looks the business, and mans biggest money pit!!!

You can put a bolt all the way through and a nut on the other side.. It's a common one, that.

That's if I understand the you got the original bolt out?

I put a helicoil in ours to repair the thread having stripped out of one hole. It did however run for about 2weeks with only one bolt tight.

Standard is M6x1.I've got a spare housing here I'm thinking of doing a 'service exchange' style helicoil service for forum members if anyone is interested? ?

tap it out 1/4 unf , no drilling needed , 1/4 unf is a small amount bigger then m6 , 2 min job

use a 1/4 unf bolts , 7/16 af head or use 11mm socket spanner

helicoils are ok to repair , but using on a bolt that you will need to get regulaurly to service they can bind up and rip the outer thread out then its even more trouble , not always but this is possible !

personally I wouldn't helicoil it

time serts are better for bolts that need to come out again , but can expensive for a kit and need to drill

thanks for your replies, im quite the rookie with these sorts, with tapping out for a new bolt, is that relatively easy? A Defender... Mans best friend, never judges, trustworthy (most of the time), go anywhere, do anything, looks the business, and mans biggest money pit!!!

if you use a 1/4 unf tap there is no drilling , just wind tap in to hole where thread has stripped , may need long tap holder or find a 1/4 drive 12 sided socket need the tap square end fits , wind in straight normally thing when tapping is couple of turns in one turn out , couple of turns in one out , until your right in

sounds more complicated than it is , but you could do both holes in under 5 mins

you may have to open the holes up in the top cover slightly for the extra sized bolt , opened up to 1/4 or 6-7mm with drill

Stripped thread would be easy?!!

I've changed mine this evening except the outer most bolt sheered! That meant the filter housing came off filter is changed and is back on but only held on by one bolt.

Has anyone done this and how would you recommend I go about removing the remainder of the bolt that is still threaded within the housing...drill out? Fairly annoyed as the rest of the service went well for my first time on the TD5 and I can now hear the centrifugal filter 'wind down' on switching off which I couldn't beforehand! 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver

I ended up drilling through the holes and putting longer bolts in, haven't had any drama since and that was about 8 months ago! A Defender... Mans best friend, never judges, trustworthy (most of the time), go anywhere, do anything, looks the business, and mans biggest money pit!!!

Thanks.

Having just been out and had another frustrated look under torch light that is going to be my only option. I'm just concerned that the 'remainder' of the bolt may cause issues inside the thread as I drill through

I can't think of any clever way to get it out though.

Did you re-tap or use bolts and nuts?

Cheers. 2002 110 CSW TD5, Zambezi Silver

Have you looked to see if it is actualy a bit of bolt stuck in there? It may just be that the bottom of the hole is full of years of accumulated dirt and dross that when poked through will just fall out as it is a through drilling on the rotor housing.
