What have I done wrong - stub axle
Currently in the middle of a defender rebuild. I put one of the front stub axles on today, and the hub and wheel etc. Whats really odd is that the wheel wont rotate all the way to lock stops in either direction? Shocked

I think I know what the problem is, but ive no idea why? if anybody could shed any light or ideas im all ears Thumbs Up

When I tried the bolts which attach the stub axle to the swivel housing, they appear as though they are too long, and when the swivel housing rotates around the swivel ball the bolts actually make contact with the ball restricing the steering lock. Now the bolts are M10 x 25mm 10.9 BZP bolts as per original equipment. Id guess that if the bolts were 5mm shorter they wouldnt protrude inside the swivel housing. I dont have a washer as non is listed on the parts catalogue, and it would have to be a huge one to make a difference!

Some pics showing how much steering lock I have. Shows that the wheel gets nowhere near the lock stop or the radius arm Big Cry

A v8, just like the one I'm currently doing...

Have you not got your original stub axle bolts? It seems that may be the problem??

Though there's nothing obvious I can see....and I replaced swivels on my 110 2 weeks ago (and fitted the steering stop tab on the front of the swivel today...I fitted them on the back on one side before !!!).
There is the dust 'shim' that goes on the swivel housing, people tend to forget them..

I'm assuming it's a Richards Chassis, I see a bracket on the left, inside leg that I had to cut off, as I wouldn't have been able to fit my exhaust on....
It wasn't on my old one??

yup v8. ordered a refurb lt230 with ATB and a R380L this week. dropped the auto plan Whistle

I didnt put the stub axle mud shield on, nor put the lock tab onto the swivel. I cant see either making the difference.

I didnt have any original bolts, as the whole thing so far has been purchased new. My current vehicle is still on the road so havent pinched anything of it yet.

All new? That is costing a penny or two then ! Nice spec though, mine isn't as fancy.

The bracket is the one that you can see on the first photo, just above the hook of your engine crane... I'm not sure what it's for Question

Pushing the boat out Smile

I'm told that's the exhaust hanger.

The easy fix to my problem is to get some shorter bolts.... Just worried that's not the answer lol!

Sure you have the correct cv joints and half shafts in there?

Try loosening then about 3 turns to see if that helps the issue

I'm pretty sure undoing the bolts, especially those at left and right hand side of the stub axle will fix it. I see the same issue on the pass side where the bolts are in but without the stub..... Thinking on, it could be the pass side is causing the problem! I have the tie rod attached. One to chk to tomorrow!

Two things.
1 are you sure that the axel stand is not preventing further movement.
2 have you checked what movement you get with the steering linkage disconnected. Don't make old people mad.

I'll be trying both tomorrow. Don't think the axle stands are a problem but looking at the picture they are in the way. Wouldn't account for why it won't hit the radius arm but that could be #2.

Is your cvjoint pulled through the hub enough and circlip on?

And the winner is #2

The pass side swivel was restricting movement because the tie bar has not yet been setup. Removing the bar gave me full steering lock to lock. Thanks! I'll drop a piccy on later. It's very shiny!

I haven't yet pulled the CV joints through fully. No circlip either yet or shims. Do you still need them with heavy duty drive members?

Glad it's sorted, looking forward to the pic.
You would need circlips, I'm sure.
