Diff oil change and magnertic plugs

Hi

I just changed the oil in the diffs of my 90 (MY09), 40k Km on the clock (although this is supposed to be done at 80k according to the manual, but 80k sounds like an awful lot to me...) and the oil was already very black and a bit smelly, especially in the front diff.

I took the opportunity to replace the drain plug with a magnetic one from x-eng but those seem to be made of alloy, so I wonder how tight it should be tightened... Workshop manual says 60Nm for the genuine plugs but I fear that might be a bit too tight for the replacement (supposedly made of) alloy plug, no?

Any advise welcome...

I gave them a quick call on your behalf as it costs me nowt....They too agreed 60Nm was too much. It is not a clear defined art apparently. The plugs are going into a tapered thread and you should wind it in so the thread on the plug itself is not exposed. Basically 'Tighten it until it doesn't leak' was what was explained to me direct.

I bought a Femco Drainplug System for the sump that clearly states that a torque setting of 20 footpounds should be used. You could possibly use that as a guideline. 'Better to go lower' (as Killer90 would say

) then increase slightly if it weeps.

Good question and a good answer, I expect it is one of those 'tighten using an experienced hand'

In the absense of any defined setting....'Half a white knuckle' normally does the trick.....Which applies in this case I think.

Hi,

I have these plugs and fiited with 18/20lbft as original plugs - but they seemed to leak!!

I have since tightened them further, leak seems to have stopped.

They seem to be made of very soft alloy - got a bit of swarf at the spanner end.

Just a word of caution to anyone thinking of changing their own diff and gearbox oils always make sure you can get the filler plug undone first ! have seen a few vehicles in the workshop at work where people have managed to drain their oil but have been unable to refill it. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Bringing thread back to life. Fitting my magnetised femco plug to my td5 sump in an hour. States 25 ft lb of torque which comes out at 33nm... Standard plug is 23 nm iirc. Seems a big hike... Going to add some blue loctite and tighten to 23 nm first... See how it feels. Thoughts? "Big green" 2000 Td5 90 IRB Developments modified (2004-2011)
