one thing I hadn't realised until recently about the idle jack (which is the feature you're talking about) is that it doesn't have a switch telling the ECU you're in 1st or reverse. It just guesses you are based on the engine revs and forward speed.

^^^ Which is something discussed at some length several months ago!

It uses the range detection switch and speed transponders to determine the gear. Clever stuff.

tightened the earth on the battery the other day and all seemed good but now Big Cry

rev counter is waving up /down. not a lot but clearly it's not right. also getting the clatter sound which I'm assuming is the result of a poor electrical signal but why o why o why ?

Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Just tried the hi/lo again after removing the plug on the side of the transfer box (not sure if it was hi/lo or diff lock).... Anyhow tried the hi/lo and in low in 1st no increase in revs while clutch depressed.......and slowly released....and then increased for a bit fluttered about and then went again and can't get them to increase again eight in first or reverse?

Any ideas?

I think what I unplugged because was the speed sender - but not sure?

Is the hi/lo switch accessed from above ie cubby box out?

Hmm good thinking...

I think the link rod changes position of get lever and doesn't impact on the switch ( but not sure)

Seriously now, the few times per year that I put my Puma 2.4 into low box (just to keep the mechanism working), the rpm at idle remains at 800, but as soon as I move the gearstick to 1st, the idle revs will immediately increase to 1000, maybe even slightly more and not fall back to 800 again until I put the gearstick back into neutral.

That's interesting.
I drive the 'Spaniel Taxi' in low range on a daily basis.
On mine, the revs do not pick up as soon as either low 1st or reverse is selected.
Having released the clutch, with no throttle input, revs have picked up to just over 1k rpm after travelling approximately 5 or 6 feet.
Not an exact measurement - I just lined the front mud flap up with a dandelion Smile
