Charging second battery in 90 (leisure 110ah)
As a caravaner I carry a second backup 110ah leisure battery. I want to keep this charged up and also if I have to change leisure batteries I want to charge up the replaced battery. At the moment I have a system that runs through a Durite split charge relay that cuts in over 13v. The problem with this is that my leisure battery is constantly charging at the same rate as the engine battery ie 14+ volts. Is there anything I can put in line that will reduce the charge rate to my leisuere battery to 13.5v
I ask this because I assume charging a leisure battery constantly at 14+ volts will damage it in some way ie over charging.

what you runs works well for me.

in fact most of my vehicle starter batteries are leisure batteries charging off the alternator at 14.2 volts. Cheers

I've got two leisure batteries on my boat (90ah) which are both charged direct from the alternator.

They show 14+ volts when the engine is running and have lasted for years and years.

They start the engine and run the domestic circuits. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop
Now a 2013 110 USW too.

You could get a dc-dc battery charger like a ctek d250s dual.

Thanks for the input. I was a tad worried that a constant 14+ volt charge rate would damage the battery but it seems not.

(Quote mikeh501 You could get a dc-dc battery charger like a ctek d250s dual.) This looks interesting but a bit expensive. My need for some new AT tyres and a full service takes precedence though.

As long as my wife can look at all her soap progs on 12v she will be happy.

I ran a leisure battery along side a starter battery on split charger permamently in a 90 I had , and all seemed ok , (mounted inside battery box )

only thing that would concern me is having a battery inside cabin area charging is possible gassing when charging without being vented to outside air , as the gases are explosive

munch90: what size were the batteries? Can you fit a decent sized battery in with the standard Defender one?

My plan on venting is to either put a small louvred plate on the outside of the van and vent through this from the battery box. The battery box would fit on the raised wheel arch shelf. Or put the battery box behind the driver side bulkhed and run a pipe through the bulk head into the existing battery bay under the drivers seat. The second would be favourite as there will be minimal observable altertion.

it was on a 200tdi 90 I had , starter battery was bigger than standard and think leisure was bit smaller , but made my own tray etc and sold it about 8yrs ago so cant remember exact details , but was a bit tight in the box
