In the same way land rover decided that the chassis doesn't need waxoil, or any other protection, and the engine should have a restricted amount of power? Question

200+K miles on a puma engine with regular servicing with the recomended oils using any diesel available at the time of needing to fill up proves nothing more is needed in the fuel I personally feel.

I agree maybe its not needed , but are remaps needed Whistle

or does it improve what is there , same as remaps

not knocking you or remaps , think you do a very good job and they are good improvment

I just cant see the benefit of spending more money on fuel adatives to run the car for no more or very little gain than just putting a good quality diesel in and no adtivies at all.

I know if does not give more power with or without it as ive tested that quite a few times now.

Out of interest Pete, have you ever done a test with Millers EcoMax? I run my Td5 with it in every tank because it runs a lot quieter and smoother. I don't know if it claims to have a power benefit, but would be interested in the result if you've tried it? 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

Not on the dyno no, I tried some Millers a long time ago in the past in my own car but it was not ecomax from memory.

One thing I do remember is when I went to France about 10 years ago, their diesel from the pump made my TD5 seem quiter, I was told it contained more rape oil than in the UK. ?

I put some Esso supreme in the other day and didn't notice any difference other than the 20p per litre extra cost (so that's approx. so that's an extra £10 !!! (I suspect I got ripped off but they're all more expensive).

I'm not suggesting Redex or 2so is as good as some of the others but they're certainly a damn site cheaper than doing the Esso supreme.

as mentioned above and by myself for me the biggest improvement is from the 2so - runs much quieter / smoother.

(similar results as when I add my home brew bio - in terms of sound).

Thumbs Up

A few mixed reviews Confused

So we can all agree it doesn't do any damage to the engine but additives of some description do make an audible difference and not just a placebo?

I've tried it too and despite wanting to feel or hear some difference I can't honestly say I did....

Hmm as a diesel engineer I would strongly suggest not putting it in anything with a DPF. As a diesel engineer that has experienced a few multi-authority stops in rural areas including diesel dipping I certainly wouldn't use any two stroke oil that's red in colour Laughing

I've never used 2 stroke oil in mine, it gets Tescos finest usually with about 8p a litre off due to their Fuelsave offer.

I have no idea if 2 stroke improves the Cetane rating of the fuel or if it improves the power.

I usually add a shot of Millers commercial vehicle fuel additive to each tank of fuel, in cold weather it does seem to start easier and with less diesel knock with additive in the tank. I can't say I have noticed any difference in the performance though.

It is supposed to add some degree of lubricity to the fuel, which might be of benefit if the additives package from the pump isn't up to much.

I haven't had any trouble with the 2.4 up until now, however the EGR has been getting noisier for the last 12 months, then moving onto a definate strained sound on a cold shut down, this is now starting to happen even after a run so I dare say the EGR is toast. Whether this would have happened on BP ultimate at 21K mikes I have no idea. However I have seen a few other posts over the years suggesting EGRS seem to die at about 21K.

Didn't the Transit get a modified water cooled EGR ?

Maybe time to get a remap and get it blanked off.

^^ I believe that the Puma 2.2 (incl. Defender) have a watercooled EGR. Not sure if you hear the chuka chuka chuka cleaning cycle with those anymore. Do you???
From new I always used the cheaper accross the border French supermarket fuels. My Puma 2.4 EGR packed up after the first 5000 km, was replaced under warranty, then no more problems and had a specific a bit raunchy cleaning cycle noise for the next year or so.
Until I switched away from those cheap French supermarket fuels, and started to use BP Ultimate exclusively. Within two tanks of that, the cleaning cycle after shutdown became suddenly much more gentle, and remains so until the present 73.000 km. Needless to say, BP Ultimate is here to stay, for the last 4 years never used anything else anymore. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
