Corrosion Prevention and Warranty ??
Morning All,

I'm due to collect my new Defender shortly, hopefully before Xmas and my plan was to get it treated from new.
I was even thinking of collecting it on a trailer to save all the crud and crap it'd collect on the 200 mile journey home but the dealer called me on Tuesday and he knew of my plan and said that he'd spoken to the service manager who said that if i have it treated underneath it would invalidate the warranty.

I'm going to try and contact Land Rover direct to get a definitive answer as i really want this done for all the obvious reasons but as its the warranty it does concern me if it actually will invalidate it.

Does anyone have experience of a similar problem please ??

I was told the same from both Dealer and Land Rover customer services.
I just keep mine clean and will get it done at 3yrs old.

Any third party doing work to your vehicle may invalidate the warranty only in so-far-as a particular claim may be rejected as a result of the third party actions; but that's a long way from stating that having it protected would automatically invalidate it.

It does give them a peg to hang an excuse on but no more,. e.g. you have a fault with the traction control light flashing and they say the module is covered in Dinitrol and it has damaged it; more difficult to say you have a leaking roof and they won't fix it because there is a protective coating on your axles!

I'd be inclined to ignore their B/S,they would have to prove it's directly related,but if your still concerned about the warranty,it wont end up in the scrap yard if you don't treat it within 3 years.Keeping on top of it with regular jetwashing the underside 3-4 times a year, you don't need to go mad with it, the time they allow at your local petrol station is enough,if you don't wanna do it,there are companies out there who specialise in cleaning pre-MOT HGV's, it's the moisture retaining dirt that causes the vast amount of corrosion. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

Land Rover really don't do themselves any favors with customers giving this kind of advice without thinking it through. I would argue they should qualify the conditions under which the warranty would be invalid and not say that any change form as delivered / standard and we will not entertain any challenge on our workmanship.

My 90 was left by it's first owner for exactly this reason. I bought mine with 10 days left on it's 3 year corrosion warranty.

What Land Rover should do (because they fail to send out a new Defender correctly protected in my opinion) is to accept that a professionally applied anti-corrosion treatment will NOT render their warranty invalid. It is highly likely that this step, taken by the owner, would prevent a subsequent claim against Land Rover in the areas treated.

I posted my experience of treating my Defender on 'Zagato's Corrosion Prevention Guide'.

I was in no doubt that this was going to be one of the first Jobs on mine.

It had been garaged from new, had seen no significant off road use, but had been through 3 winters by the time I treated it.

If I was buying a new Defender (before the replacement comes along) and didn't live in Dubai, I would definitely do as you initially suggested and get it treated on day 1.

I would also do as you suggest and get further qualification form LR... is their complete warranty invalid or would say a paint defect below the windscreen (where the paint is definitely thinner, I know because I've measured it) still be subject to a legitimate claim Question

When I picked mine up from new I got the dealership to treat the underneath, they did not do the job themselves but farmed the job out to an independent along the road. I know this was not a one off as a year later my mate got the exact thing done.They made a pretty poor job of it mind you but as I said the main dealer organised it before pickup so I don't know how they can claim it invalidates your warranty. 2.2 2012 110 utility Orkney Grey

I had my 90 Dinitrolled within days of purchasing this spring, my dealer said no problem with doing it, was on personal lease from JLR at the time, not in writing of course....
However, have now bought it outright and having seen the crud that gets on the underside even in this pretty easy going winter (so far....) I'm absolutely chuffed to bits I had it Dinitrolled asap.
I would do the same again, but since 'me landy' is absolutely the best motor I've ever bought doubt I'll be doing it, because it's a keeper Very Happy

This is old news but...

Some of us who bought new Puma's when they first came out in 2007 queried the lack of corrosion protection evident on earlier Defenders and as a result had the vehicles rustproofed free of charge by our supplying dealers, nothing whatsoever was said about invalidating warranties [bearing in mind the main dealer carried out the work of course]. The official line adopted by Land Rover over the lack of underbody or cavity wax was that improved production techniques etc meant it was not required on the Puma.... Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.

[Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc]

I had the SVX Dinitrolled within the warranty period. Dealer commented how nice a job it was. Had several warranty jobs done thereafter, including under the 4-6th year extended warranty which in this country is provided by Land Rover themselves, and the Dinitrol never was an objection. Never even got mentioned by them.

Taking this argument a bit further ......

If I put a film of wax on the underside of my Defender I invalidate the warranty? After washing the Defender. if I apply a film of wax polish to the bodywork to maintain its appearance - do I also invalidate the warranty?

Remember that many dealership staff are not the brightest bulbs in the box - so I'd treat their comments with a pinch of salt.

I have a 2014 Defender and it has a wax coating on the underside - no dealer problems to report other than "anything else we can do to help you"!

When I ordered my new one last month the dealership offered me a full vehicle waxoyl £240+vat. I declined because I want it done properly with care and attention but my point is that if dealers are offering the service from new then doing it yourself can't invalidate the warranty. Dealership 'attitudes' vary vastly dependant on time of year, what way the wind is blowing, ambient millibar pressure of the day and whether they have more common sense than an amoeba (rare I know).

Their customer care service I have found extremely helpful as an ally when it has come to 'differing opinions' on warranty work. Even once going as far as giving me a free service instead of honouring the work required. They knew it was an issue but had it been honoured under warranty the proverbial floodgates would have opened. The service was significantly more expensive than the remedial work was so I was happy.
A good amiable rapport and reasoning with your dealer will get you much further than throwing teddies out of the cot and desk banging in my opinion. Some of course like yours will every time seek out ANY excuse to get out of warranty work.....find another dealer.

I am fortunate to have a good relationship with both the supplying dealer and the nearer dealership who have carried out various warranty repairs, I have asked when booking in if the underseal would cause any issues but both have been more happy to carry out the works and there's never been any problem Thumbs Up
