Think you got it bit wrong

position 2 with key sidelights + dip beam not dim dip

dim dip was never really law , just a thing we done that europe fined ( or tried to ) us for doing

dim dip was never part of mot

Normally the resisters burn out which makes you just lose the dim dip

but not sure about the bit of postion 1 on the switch giving sides and heads with ign on ( after fitting relays and leaving dim dip resister connected ) for mot as normally on test you would switch sides on check , switch heads check , if they both come on together and no sides on alone if that should be a fail

If changing the headlight switch is easy, can someone give me an idiots guide to doing it please. I can find any reference in the Haynes book for fitting a new one.

Unscrew the column cowls and remove then unplug the switch. Unscrew the nut holding the switch to the column (I think it's about a 13/14mm) pull switch out and then do the reverse to put it back together.
