Quick question (sorry if it's been covered elsewhere but the numbers/options confuse me!)
Q: Can you put wider than standard tyres on standard boost alloys? If so, how wide can you go? (...and with/without 30mm spacers?) Thanks, Ben |

Yes you can, probably 265's will be OK (but wait for someone to verify that).
But why do you want wider tyres, that is the question? Wider tyres will be less efficient at cutting through a soft surface to find solid ground, things like mud or snow. But they'll grip better on tarmac due to the larger contact area. If it's purely cosmetic then do whatever you want. 
Defenders, for their size, have surprisingly small tyres but I think that is due to the grip on soft surfaces issue. I argued with some chap who wanted wider tyres because he slipped on a load of wet leaves, I said maybe narrower tyres might have worked better and he couldn't see the point I was making. I told him to have a look at rally cars on snow but he still argued wider was better. Oh well. |

285s are OK albeit not recommended on a 7" rim and you won't have any suspension issues at all.
You will probably need to fit 30mm spacers or wheels with ET0 offset in order to be able to get a reasonable lock, and the outside of the vehicle will get plastered when driving in mud, however. |

Apart from plastering the side of your vehicle with mud, with spacers fitted you will not be able to compete in RTV trials run under MSA regulations. If the tread of your new tyres protrude pass the vertical line dropped from your wheel flare you will need to fit wider wheel flares/ arches to remain legal.

285/75 R 16 BFG KM2 Mud T/A on Boosts with 30mm spacers do not protrude beyond the arches and are (subject to being insured of course) wholly legal.

Now from the guys who fit tyres
Yes a 285 will fit a Boost (Many run Zu's on 285's although some say Zu's are 7.5J  ) however 285 are not recomended you may find a refusal of fitting at some centres as well
My 50th is on 285 D Modulars on 8J and 0ET whilst the OEMs are being refurb'd Pic's later |
