Yes it will fit but you will need to change the bell housing.

It will fit but you will have to convert over the gear stick linkages as the Discovery's have a short stick and the Defenders have long sticks and the bellhousings are different.

Hi shaggydog, yeah atm its fitted with the defender LT77 box, as reguards any benifit i was thinking gearing Graham

If you changed the transfer box to a Discovery 1.2 box then you would get a slightly longer legged Tdi but would suffer when heavily loaded.
