Depends on what or where your using it , but found the gray soft spring not so good on mine ( all uk driving )

Found black hard spring better seemed to warm up better , temp more stable

I'm in Stellenbosch, easily gets up to 46C in summer, and maybe sometimes goes down to 8-9C in winter.

I'll do the mod after winter though. --

Mines a LHD and only used abroad .. And in the summer Thumbs Up

I'm also planning on doing Nordkapp again but i have a thermotop c installed so should be fine

I have also been following the threads about thermostats and temps, and was contemplating buying a lower temp stat.

Last summer I drove a couple of 1000 Km trips with 3500Kg in tow, and was impressed how the 2.2 held up to 100 - 110 Kmh cruise speed uphill and down. I only had the standard temp gauge to go by.

The prevous 2.4 would go into limp mode if pushed up a gradient with the same trailer.

I hooked up an Ultragauge in October, and observe since then, what the real temperature readings are. I rarely see less than 88° once the motor has fully warmed. Motorway and backroads, the temperature stays between 88° and 92°.

I am curious to see what happens in summer with the trailer. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,
2008 Td4 90 SW,
2012 2.2 90 SW,
2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma

I was thinking of fitting this PEL500110 suggested by Daniele (dgardel). Which reportedly starts opening at 82° and fully open at higher 80°s, as opposed to the standard version which starts to open at 88° only, and is fully open only at 96°.

My theory for that is that it can only do an engine (and engine oil) good, if it is running at 80s temp as opposed to higher 90s.... And that irrespective of the outside temp, as when a thermostate starts to open only at 88°, it should be doing that irrespective if it is 0° or 30° outside.
Well, we are in Geneva here, so in the summer it can be 15° or it can be 30°+ for longer periods of time. Much like the rest of Europe...

But that thread on aulro.com makes me wonder what to expect from that PEL500110. Seems too many people there indicate that it does not really start opening at 82°, but possibly only at 92°, and that at high engine load, this thermostat seems to make engine run at higher temps than our standard Puma thermostats do.

I know that your own findings seem to confirm that this PEL500110 is indeed lowering engine running temp, but would first like to see a bit more confirmation as I am puzzled for now.
Until this is fully cleared up, I will stay standard I think.

Now, I have another mod up my sleeve this spring to possibly lower engine running temp a bit, more about that later. Whistle

FIRST THING be careful with part numbers as some makers are mixing numbers up and making part number cover different parts for cheapness ( some info on this on rover car forums mainly to do with freelander k series )

ive just done run to our west country ( no towing but fairly loaded up ) and in march so not hot , about 260ish mile run and found the black one fine

warms up much the same as standard one

heater still good

slightly lower run temp than standard one ( never see temps as high as standard one on scangauge )

Today up at 01.00 32deg c a little steamy, hooked up the trailer twin axle all up 1.5 tonne. My mission too drive 1500km South, so loaded up the 110 Puma family set sail. Ran well ambient 35c at 100km/h ultraguage showing 82/ 87?dependant on topography. This is abig improvement than before with the 88c thermostat. It is easy too observe on the ultraguage that it starts too open at 82c and is fully open at 88c. However if going uphill and putting my boot into it, I saw 105 displayed on the ultraguage. The 82c helps, but in my opinion is not the complete answer, of more cooling capacity! With the usual engine mods, more power probably equals more heat output? Very Happy

Think you hit the nail on the head saying 'more power = more heat'.

If you reset it to the standard map with EGR closed you probably wouldn't hit 105 degrees.

Remember, the standard radiator was sized for 90kW!

Today lightly loaded ambient 32deg c the ultra guage did not go above 86c. I guess that I was not using much more than half of the available power and torque estimated to be 175bhp/ 480nm. This most excellent Alive map has not increased heat output my foot has! Laughing The ideal would have been a 3 to 4 litre engine, however the 2.4 is admirable for what it achieves! Thumbs Up
