I thoroughly enjoyed being at Sandhurst, would definitely recommend it. Still serving so if you need any advice let me know, more than happy to assist.

The place itself is an excellent day out.

BUT Whistle

Tell him to forget the Army and to think about a career in the SENIOR SERVICE and than when he has decided to join the Royal Navy, let him have a think about the elite ROYAL NAVY SUBMARINE SERVICE.

Its not all about the money, but Submarine pay is believe you me a very nice addition to the pay slip, especially if you get your nuclear engineering pay as well. Thumbs Up [/b] You only have one life, live it....forget the cost.

Senior service??

Submariners, so let me get this right, you live in a big metal penis, and like to get into a warm bed left by the bloke just going on shift? Assuming you still operate a hotbed system? Or do you just share the bed? Rolling with laughter 110 D250 SE HT

Er! Yes Senior Service. The oldest of the British Armed Forces.

No HOT BUNKING for some senior NCO"S and OFFICERS (Dependant on Class of Boat), but even Hot bunking must be better than a ditch with a fellow PONGO! Rolling with laughter

But you do get to stay in 4/5 star hotels for a couple of days when deployed and to top it all you get subsistance on top of your pay to help with the beer habit the Submariner develops after being at sea for a couple of months.

Walfy a bit of inter service banter is always good, at the end of the day we are all on the same side or all have been, would I sit in a field getting shot at…. not on your nelly, but then some people wouldn't spend 4-10 months a year sat below the waves doing what we do. You only have one life, live it....forget the cost.

Banter is what it is all about. I mean no harm with any of my comments. It's just nice when you get a few that bite and bite hard.

Like you say we are all on e same side aiming for the same thing, well everyone apart from the artillery Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter 110 D250 SE HT

it would be a good day out and a good eye opener.

If he has the quals then nothing lost going to a commission, if he doesnt then look at other options. Cheers

Or join the Army and just do the exciting bits the RN do by attachment. Cheers

While I wouldn't say not to go to Sandhurst, but remember there is the rank and file entry into the Army.
Being very cynical and thinking about what he wants to after his military career. A lot of ex orifices end up in London doing city type jobs. Not everyone's idea of fun
If he joins at the bottom he will get something out of it. If he joins a Corps he will get a good trade that he can use outside the wire.

There's an implication here that "city type" jobs are bad.

I know a few ex-Sandhurst chaps. Two that got out (late 20s) immediately spring to mind: one (infantry) is a now in a fairly senior position in a well known management consultancy (and loves it) other (REME) went to work for a major bank and now has a fairly senior position with a major retailer (and loves it).

Both have very obvious leadership skills, work well under pressure, and advise on/lead operations for their respective organisations. Both seem to be doing very well for themselves.

The common factor, aside from being ex-forces and thoroughly good blokes, is that both did MBAs when they left. Opened up a lot of options for them and helped them work out what they want to do.

Horses for courses mind and trades work well for some folk. Former Royal Signals guy runs an aerial install business near us. Obviously finds it Censored easy compared to what he used to do and seems to enjoy life.

Thanks for all your responses and the humour Very Happy

Spent most of this evening in A&E with him as the little Censored decided he would compete today on an assault course and let go of the zip wire a bit too early Big Cry . Anyway, all ok, apart from dented pride and looking forward to going. Good earl to start in the morning to try and get their early.

Thanks again for all your posts. He's looking forward to reading them all Whistle

Cheers

Steve
