Mounting tow electrical socket into rear cross member
Ok, a job for the bank holiday!

I want to fix the tow electrical socket into the oval recess on the rear cross member.
It looks like it'll have to be drill 3 x holes to mount the socket, but then how do I fix it to the inner cross member of my TD5?
I can't see anyway I have room to manipulate a nut onto a bolt, so am I limited self tappers?

Thanks folks ,

Rob

Hi Rob

Did this a couple of weeks ago. I used three rivnuts that accepted the bolts supplied with the socket.

I made a cardboard template of the socket with the holes marked and used this to mark the cross member for drilling.

Just make sure you position the socket so that the flap will open.

Bob,

Thanks. Hadn't thought of rivnuts: I've never used them before. I'll do a bit of research.
Definitely sounds like the way forward.

Cheers

Rob

^^If you want to invest in a Rivnut tool, I can highly recommend the MemFast tool:

Pete,
Thanks. Not really worth buying it for just this one job, unless I find myself using it for numerous other applications and it becomes invaluable. I have noted the possibility of making a home-made rivnut tool option, but not sure how well this works.

Cheers

Rob

just to do a couple of rivnuts , you can just use long nut and bolt with a washer

screw bolt into rivnut , put in hole then tighten nut on to rivnut with washer between nut and rivnut tighten enough to pull up rivnut keeping rivnut pushed in hole and holding bolt with extra spanner

if that makes sense !

Great.
Thanks for your idea Munch90. Think I've got it, but sure it will become totally clear when it comes to do it!

tighten in stages and check how much it's pulled up , careful not to strip thread in rivnut

You could use this, very much what Munch said. You may need to add a couple of oversize nuts to bring the tightening nut clear of the X member.
