Oil Spray in Engine Compartment!
Did a quick under bonnet check on my 2.2 Puma and noticed a red/pink oil sprayed around the engine compartment especially under the bonnet lid. Looks like ATF but can't be. No obvious leaks. Any ideas??? perhaps power steering fluid!!

If it is mainly on the passenger side of the engine, including the underside of the bonnet it's most likely the brake vacuum pump. It should also drip on to the ground on the passenger side from the oil that has been blown into the engine bay. Look at the front of the brake vacuum pump, in the centre, as that it where it leaks from. It is not much but it gets thrown around the engine bay and really makes a mess. Check your gearbox breather pipe?

Might have been overfilled and then got hot and shot what it didn't need out the breather?

If it's red/pink then it's not going to be brakes or gearbox is it?

Look to see if power steering has been overfilled or the pipe underneath is loose or split. Sometimes the jubilee clip just needs nipping up a fraction.

Oil Spray in Engine Compartment! - Conclusion
Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions. The truck was rushed to the stealers for investigation (under warranty). The spray mess was cleaned and all potential leaks checked and nothing found (all fluid levels good). The final theory was coolant (pink stuff) that had partially evaporated and thickened on the bonnet under surface and engine plastic covers. Cooling system pressure tested but found to be good. Mystery!!

The truck was then booked in for a turbo hose replacement as recommended by LR (MY12). The hose is sound but will be replaced anyway!

The leak spray issue will continue under observation.

Hi Shorty

The explanation given sounds pretty poor!! How can a problem that causes fluids to be sprayed around the engine bay just go away - its not logical.....and also pretty bad service to not find the fault and just send you away for the fault to develop.

I would suggest that it might be your radiator expansion cap leaking or not holding pressure. Does you header tank need topping up?

Nick, thanks for your comments! The truck was given 15 minutes of their precious time in the workshop for investigation. We are booked in for turbo hose replacement next week. I will request a further investigation. Coolant level just below 'cold level' and needs a small top-up.
