Hi, thanks for the info Phil current : defender 110 sw 2.2 puma 2012 and 230.000km today and again my Range Rover VM2.5 engine from 1992 and 528.000km today. When the dealer said everything needs replacing, did they give you any actual figures of what they had measured to reach this conclusion?
Reading from the MY07 Workshop Manual for 110s: Front disc Ventilated, outboard, Disc diameter 298 mm (11.73 in) Disc thickness 24 mm (0.95 in) Wear limit 1 mm (0.04 in) per side of disc Disc run-out maximum 0.15 mm (0.006 in) Pad area 58 cm! (9.0 in!) Total swept area 801.3 cm! (124.2!) Pad material Ferodo 3440 non asbestos Pad minimum thickness 3 mm (0.12 in) Rear disc Solid, outboard disc diameter 298 mm (11.73 in) disc thickness 14.1 mm (0.56 in) Wear limit 1 mm (0.04 in) per side of disc Disc run-out maximum 0.15 mm (0.006 in) Pad area 36.2 cm! (5.61 in!) Total swept area 694 cm! (106.98 in!) Pad material Ferodo 3440 non asbestos Pad minimum thickness 3 mm (0.12 in) It should be easy for you to measure both discs and pads and challenge the dealer on their readings if they are inaccurate. |

No, no specific information just that the pads are worn out (I agree with this). If they would let me provide my own discs and pads and their labour costs were about 1/2 then I would probably bite the bullet and fork out. As an "official" LR dealer though they only use "original" LR parts.
So if the lips on the rear discs are only approaching 1mm and even less on the front, I'll assume they'll be okay until the next pad change but keep an eye on them. If the discs get worn 1.5mm each side is that a serious safety risk? Tell someone you love them today because life is short. Interesting that the rear discs appear to have worn more than the fronts - if these are the original discs, I'd expect the opposite to be the case. Obviously different if you have already been through a set of front discs.
Change at 1mm per side would be an absolute for me, I'd not run them to 1.5mm. Remember what they are doing for you! Conversely, I'd be perfectly happy at 0.75mm but would be measuring them after every 1000 miles to check on progress , which may or may not be linear based on type of driving, different pads and wear characteristics of discs as they get thinner/closer to their limit. Just out of interest why do you agree the pads are worn out - have they been measured? Can you use an indie - LR brakes are very straight forward and I'd be happy for a kwik fit type place even to do this task for me. You can even stop and watch if you think they might mess it up. |

Bear in mind that a dealer will tell you the pads need replacing if in his estimation the will reach min thickness before the next service is due. Provided you keep an eye on them and change them when needed you can usually get many more miles out of them.

Well although I only checked visually, the rear pads are pretty hairy - down to about 1-2mm.
The front ones are about 4-5mm, so may well need changing by next service. This matches the different amount of wear on the back and front discs. The dealer was certainly right about the rear pads. I should have checked earlier myself - last time was last Summer I think  but for him to quote me 500 quid for the fronts that don't really need doing... 
I've ordered new rear discs just in case I get a nasty surprise - if I do I may need some help from you lot to change them
*Edit* Sadly no decent indies around here. The only one I trusted retired and left the business to his hapless son 
So I'm stuck with the ludicrously expensive (but competent) dealer or learning to do it myself. I'm quite happy to keep learning and it's partly why I chose the 110 in the first place... oh yes, and thank God for this forum  Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

you can currently get EBC grooved / vented disks and green stuff pads for £99 per axle on the net, so the parts would only be £200 plus postage. will look for the site later on when I get a chance (Bit more direct from EBC) DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Pretty much what I did... except I ordered the wrong ones for the back. Didn't notice the rears are different on a 110 and a 90
