I was quoted £600 from my usual main dealer for a 4th service a couple of months back, the vehicle went to a local independent and was done for around half that figure. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

I stick it into a garage for B (2yrly) services only.
'A' service is more than manageable on your own for around £50 in parts/fluids Just remember to get a main dealer to do your 'corrosion check' every year, mine did it free but some may charge £10-20. Well worth keeping your 6yr corrosion guarantee going Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Wasn't aware of the 6 year corrosion guarantee, so thanks for that. Is it transferrable to subsequent owners or only for the original buyer? Cheers. |

Yep it sticks with the car.
It's just a box that gets ticked if you look in the book, but since mine recently had it's first non-main dealer service, I pooped into my local main dealer (guy salmon) and the service manager was happy to get someone to spend 5 mins looking it over before ticking the box and signing next to it to show it was done. He said some may charge £10-20 labour but I guess if you seem reasonable then they'll be more than happy to do it free. Definitely worth doing, I've had my windscreen 'hinges' and a few bolts and mudflaps replaced all for free. As I said it stays with the car and they probably wouldn't even check of the box was ticked, but you don't want to give them an excuse not to. According to Land rovers service sheet the only difference between a 24K and 48K service is Axle and Transfer box oils are replaced. There are some ridiculous recommendations regarding replacing the brake hoses and caliper seals that I have never replaced as service items. Worth checking to see if the price quoted includes !

That's good to hear. I'll do likewise nearer the time and get the box ticked for the corrosion warranty. Thanks Skeggy, Price I was quoted includes Axle and Transfer box oils, but not sure about brake hoses and calliper seals. Will need to check. Cheers. |

Now its over 3 years old, would you consider a DIY Service? As a general rule I would say a good independent is around 50% of a Land Rover Dealer and with some JLR Service charge rates north of £100/Hr it doesn't take much to make a big saving. Some Independents are now running at around £80/Hr If you DIY Service, even buying OEM Service Parts you can save further, if that's your aim. Service A is doable for most and Service B is not beyond reach with a bit of effort... worth checking the Service requirements to judge for yourself, do you have the full version of this? 
Defender 2.4 TDCI Service A good Independent is always worth tracking down, (I have no knowledge of North Essex but i am sure someone on here will) My local Independent Safari Engineering, is very good, and I have had endless advice over the years, it is always my first port of call when things go wrong, I get some general Service items there too. The Corrosion Check until Y6 is probably worth the LR stamp, but if you go down the DIY route within the first 6 years (when you should), my understanding so far, is that you essentially go 'off grid' having taken non-standard measures. I would be very interested to hear if anyone has direct experience of 'improving' the LR standard offer underneath (not difficult) and then tried to get something addressed under guarantee; have they succeeded? Each to their own on Servicing, but providing safety is not compromised I am happy to get the tools out, after all the Defender is probably one of the best vehicles to work on. My intention is to have the vehicle serviced professionally until it is around 6 years old and then I'll see where I go from there. I don't have a copy of the service schedule you mention. Any idea where I can download it from as I would be interested to see what I should expect? Have subsequently made contact with an Indy garage nearby who have quoted £265 for a B service - inc. VAT, which seems much more reasonable to me. Does anyone have any experience of using LRS Land Rover in Halstead, Essex? Cheers. |

Have you phoned up RST on Mersea, they have done mine in the past and are brilliant, theres nothing they dont know about a defender and are very reasonable pricing. Id thoroughly recommend them, certainly worth getting a price. There used by lookers for fitting accessories. Hope this helps

Have you signed up with Land Rover Allegiance? You can do it through a dealer, and then you qualify for discount and a free MOT at the same time as the service.
I had a 4 year service done last November - I think it cost around £450 at the main dealer, but I was approached by a secret shopper (from Land Rover) at the same time who offered me £100 if they could accompany me on the visit to the dealer so I bit his arm off, and put that towards the service, so got it for £350 if you like! (PS I tipped off the dealership that I had the SS with me, as they have always been good to me, and normally the missus comes in with me, not some strange bloke!)
