9 months old, 12,000 miles and corrosion in full swing.
So she's 9 months old as just coming up for 12,000 miles and her first service. I Dinitrolled her in her first week but didn't get around to doing the ACF50 on the hinges and bodywork until this week end Embarassed

When I started to go around the hinges, capping, steps and rivets I noticed there is already quite a bit of rust and paint bubbles.

And quite worryingly a red rust leak that looks like a coolant leak of some sort has appeared on the bottom right hand side of the radiator on top of the chassis (which is covered in dinitrol).

When she goes in next week for her first service will I be able to get the hinge and rear step replaced under warranty?

Is £375 for the service about right?

What does the anti-corrosion warranty cover? Should I expect some resistance from the dealer?

Are there any other common issues I should check out?

Its disappointing (not surprising) to see such a level of rot after 9 months. I live in the midlands, not next to the sea! I wish i'd followed Zagato's advice and applied the ACF50 much much earlier.

I'm hoping the dealer (Shukers in Shrewsbury) will fix these issues under the warranty but any guidance on how best to approach this would be gratefully accepted.

You should not have any issues at all in getting it all done under warranty

Mine went in exactly the same places, and they replaced them with no argument at all.

Just give it a good look over before the service and point out every little thing. Including the bumper bolts, rear cross member bolts etc.

the only problem is they will replace the bolts with the exact same rubbish, and they will rust again in a few months.

That isn't good enough for the age or miles at all. Mines just over six years old and 30k and it's not as bad as that in those locations. And that's before bring Dinitrolled too.
They should sort that out for you, if they want to replace with the safe rubbish source the items yourself and ask them to fit it...

I'm going to go back out and check the mirror arms and sliding window hinges.

I'll check the bumper bolts as well. I'm hoping this is the source of the red leak on the front chassis member!

Reading throughout the forum it does seem like people are getting these issues sorted out but the dealers. It just seems crazy that there is so little anti corrosion protection put in place a the factory.

the red dust is because there is a bolt missing through the hole you can see just behind front panel . the hole is for one of the bonnet lock panel stays or for aircon rad mount frame , should be m8 bolt in there . the hole is bigger than 8mm but that's what it has.
the dust is rust dust where the bracket has been vibrating

and to be honest it needs a lot more rustproofing done

Thanks for the feedback guys. Feel a bit better about the £375 now.

Yes, I agree. I didn't do the Dinitrolling even close to well enough Embarassed

I'm a newbie at this and though I had soaked the thing in Dinitrol Crying or Very sad

I will try and get the grille off tonight and check for the missing M8 bolt. It was missing 3 bolts holding the rear seats in when I first got it so a few more is no surprise!


I guess i'll under there again in the dry weather and adding A LOT more Dinitrol and A LOT of ACF50.

God knows what i would have looked like if i'd done nothing at all!

Looks like all the usual places. Also check the rear edge of the bumper, bulkhead area where the screen block bolts are on the inside and along the length of the foam seal [pop out the lower dash speakers], side steps / bars, towbar etc..... Steve.

Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.
