So...looking to change to BFG muds (as per my classified ad) and want to know peoples thoughts on the following tyres, if you don't mind.
Anyone know what the differences, etc are between these: http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m64b0s493p11217 and these: http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m64b0s493p52198 Anyone have experience of either? Know of their on-road manners, aswell as off-road, etc etc....plus any other thoughts, impressions? I'm now set on the BFG's, so please don't try and get my into any others!

I believe the old Mud Terrains failed the new noise restrictions and this is the new tyre after some time of the production of the old tyres being closed... 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

That is right. The old BFG Muds were too noisy for legislations so the KM2 was developed. I have 2 sets of BFG M/T KM1 - 285/75/16 on my Defender and 285/75/16 on my Discovery and I swear by them (to the point I blive they are worth the extra money!! Several months ago I saw a set of 235/85/16 KM2s and thought- they look skinny, weedy and not up to the job................but today I saw a set of 285/75/16 KM2s and though 'Holy crap they are wider than mine!!'... but with a tape measure soon realised they are the same width (even thougt they look wider). Only issue I would have them is that they don't have the huge gaps between the tread which makes them soo awesome off-road. With reference to M/T slipping in the wet----- I have never been able to get my Muds to slip- it is more likely for the Defender to roll first- even in the wet. Glyn 
P.S. Might have a set of 5x 285/75/15 BFG M/T KM1s for sale soon (9,000 miles on them but they look like new). |

Whats the general thoughts on 285's on 7J wheels though? I thought the safe way to go was no bigger than 265's without swapping wheels aswell?
I'm really not sure what to do - I love the look of the M/T's, but wonder if they'll be too noisy on road. I don't really want 2 sets of wheels/tyres around the place, and if I'm being really honest, I dont get off road as much as I'd like - ie, majority of miles will be on-road. Oooh, what do I do.....should I really be looking at going with the A/T's (not that it's what I really want to hear!)?? Might be interested in your 285's though Glyn, if we think they'll be OK (and if the price is right, of course  ) Mark

As you are talking about BFG 285/75x16, and if you take BFGoodrich recomended fit, they state 7.5x16 - 9x16 for that section tyre.
I think an 8J - 8.5J is just right. We will not fit 285/75x16 on a 7x16 wheel rim. Thats why I am trying to find a nice set of 8J or 8.5J alloys for my 110 utility, so if anyone has a set they don't want, please get in touch.

I'm just going for a set of KM2'S to accompany my 10 X 15 Mach 5s. As mentioned on another thread some geezer in a Disco just got 120,000 miles out of a set of BFGs.
I think it's Glyn that has had 56,000 out of his. (Correct me if I've misquoted) but his recommendation was good enough for me! That's all the sunshine I'm blowing up your crimper today Glyn! 
Main difference I can see on BFG website: Characteristics Performance and styling has been improved to give serious off-road enthusiasts the performance edge they need with a stronger, more capable tyre than anything they've been used to. ■Over-sized sidewall cords up to 33% stronger than the previous generation tyre ■Extended sidewall lugs mean more grip, especially in ruts and soft soil conditions. ■Sidewall compound is highly resistant to chipping and bruising caused by rocks and other off-road obstacles. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Haha, I have too.......was a long day and a a few beers and it should be 16 inch rims
I will quote you wrong....my disco had about 45,000 miles n the BFGs  . and again I reacon they are almost new still
....If there are enough people how about approaching a few companies about a group buy- I am thinking about 7 KM2s. in either 285/75/16 or 33x 12.5 R16 Love you too Mal Glyn |

For 29 X 11:50 X 15 for KM2s I'm looking at £150 each fitted/balanced etc. Just a figure for people to work on. I'll run with that cause I'm happy to pay it and it's 'local all in!'

Is anyone local (ish) to Oxfordshire with a set of KM2's on their Defender? I mean, anyone localish who wouldn't mind taking me for a spin on a few roads.....still a little concerned what the extra road noise will be like. Realise it'd be louder, but would like to find how much
