Jacking up the Defender?
I've been endeavouring to familiarize myself with how the Defender works, and have been trying to make sure that I know how to use the jack.
I've looked at the owner's manual, & I can see exactly where the jack is placed under the front axle, but the rear "spot" is not so clear. The illustration in the manual shows the jack to be placed under the rear axle housing directly under the coil spring. That is impossible on our Defender, because there is a stabiliser bar mounting bracket in the way, & also a track rod.
So, I guess, a bit further in, on the axle, is where it will have to be?
Any thoughts?
Thanks, Pickles.

Yes, that'll be fine. As long as you avoid any obvious moving parts such as the ARB or shock mounts, then anywhere along the axle is fine. If you're doing any more than changing a wheel, then remember to leave space for an axle stand to fit next to the jack. Darren

Even if changing a wheel a folding axle stand is a well worth while safety addition.

This valuable safety addition is doubly important if doing it solo, in a quiet/remote location.

Plus sling wheel underneath as well.

The best jacking points for the Defender are the four standard holes, two front two rear, use the standard LR upright jack.

Then there are the four suspension arm to axle mounting points and lastly the two differentials. The diffs are strong enough but you'll be lifting the entire axle off the ground so use this method as a last resort.

Use the suspension arms to axle positions if possible as you are only lifting the axle rather than the body, chassis and then the axle if you use the standard LR upright jack.

As said earlier do not use the anti-roll bar or their mounting positions to jack the vehicle.

Geobloke,

I think the newer Defenders have a bottle jack, unlike our older TD5 with the screw/pillar jack that fits those holes.

Not sure the bottle jack will reach... Rolling with laughter

Cheers

I don't think the pillar jack has been 'standard' for about ten years - maybe even longer Shocked Darren

Well it certainly came as standard in my 2002, so would expect them to be in all TD5 Defenders... Could be wrong though. Either way I am still surprised that LR stuck with it for the entire 90/110, 200tdi , 300tdi and some of the TD5 Defenders...

Bottle jack makes much more sense. Thumbs Up

My '05 has the bottle jack so it must have changed somewhere between the two. Still a good long time ago. Darren

My 2005 90 came with a pillar jack, but I would only ever use it as a last resort. I keep it in there for originality's sake and to stop it getting mucked up in one of the sheds. Decent trolley jack is my preference (at home obviously) or LR bottle jack if out and about (stored under passenger seat). 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green

My 02 station wagon only had the bottle jack. The last time I used one of those wind up jacks was on a Series 3 that came with my job. My '85my 110 truck cab had one of those screw jacks that look a little like a bottle jack but operate by turning the handle which screws out the centre part lifting the motor, they had to be kept well greased to work.

My 2007 DC came with the ridiculous long screw jack! I have since binned it and carry a bottle jack for normal use.

I also carry a high-lift so I can do all the dangerous and ill-advised stuff that people regularly get told off for on this forum! Rolling with laughter

Those screw jacks were ridiculous! Mind you, they were bloody quick when you stick an impact gun on the end to wind it up Whistle Whistle I've still got mine! An engine to TDi for!

Found this note in some old records I have:

"Models LD - Defender

Title Defender Bottle Jack Introduction

Last Modified 11-SEP-2008 12:19

Category Chassis

Symptom 307000 Jack/Tool & Spare

Issue: Introduction of Bottle Jack for all Defender variants.

Cause: The method of stowage for the Pillar type Jack along the bulkhead tended to produce a rattle type noise over irregular road surfaces. The introduction of the Bottle Jack and 3 piece handle allows storage of the all the Jacking components under the Left Hand Seat for an improved stowage installation.

Action: No action required. This is a notification of change of supplied condition from vin. 9A768482."
