I know the area well and have done most of the lanes. What type of lanes are you looking for, gentle, hard core or something in between? If I don't get back to the Lakes next weekend I can PM you some details and ideas.

That sounds brilliant.

We're all quite experienced so no reservations in the more hard core lanes, although a nice mix if there's some gentler more scenic ones too I guess would be nice.

I was going to start marking things out on a map, but although I have driven them a few years ago, I cant remember whats what and worth doing! Any advice would be great Smile

I think a good place to start would be Langdale, as there is a decent lane which is fairly long with a few challenging sections, that comes out just north of Coniston near Tilberthwaite. Then head down the East side of Coniston Lake to Parkamoor. This is quite possibly the most challenging lane in the Lakes with excellent views of Coniston Lake and Fells. Then heading north towards Ambleside, there is the Fox lane through Grizdale Forest which is quite good, followed by a more gentle lane which passes north of Tarn Hows. I would then head north passed Ambleside and Grasmere to St John in the Vale, near Keswick. This is the start of the Old Coach Road which is probably the longest lane in the Lakes with excellent views of Blencathra. It is best done west to east, it's normally quite a gentle lane but is washed out in parts providing some good axle twisters. These suggested lanes will take a full day to do, include some of the best lanes in the Lakes and have the added advantage of finishing near J40 of the M6 for people who need to head straight home. I can PM you a route plan with grid references if you like, or if I'm free next Sunday I wouldn't mind joining you Very Happy

Thats brilliant, thank you! Bow down

I've done the lakes a couple of years ago, but could never tell you where they were on a map, so thats helped enormously!

Let me know if you are free, and hopefully it hasnt become too large a group by then and I'm sure you'd be more than welcome.

If not this time, then give me a shout in the future if you want, I've just moved up to Barrow in Furness, so will always be willing to get out and about!

Thanks

Am I right in saying the lane you have said for Parkamoor is a dead end? (Confirmed that it is) Is it still worth doing?

And whats your view on stile end and gatescarth? 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

Parkamoor is a fabulous lane. Best dead end in the Lake District.

Stile End has a new route removing the difficult section. Bottom of Gatesgarth has some amazing views.

Parkamoor is a dead end but worth doing if you're in the area, I usually have a brew at the turn round point and enjoy the view.

Stile ends another good lane, tricky in places and very tight at the start due to farm buildings, though it's awhile since I've done that one. Not done Gatesgarth yet, I was hoping to do it with the Series One club, two years back, but work got in the way.

I live in the Duddon Valley, when I'm not working away which, is only 18 miles from Barrow. I'll let you know if I'm home this weekend.

Parkamoor, is that U5051 on the Cumbria Council Green Lanes site?

Is Gategarth the one that is only open once a month and you need a permit for? Can you do any of it in March and is it worthwhile if you can? 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6

Yes, I've researched that Gatescarth does need a permit to drive it. 2003 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Belize Green - "Betty"

Gatesgarth requires a permit, it's only open once a month. Maybe we should arrange a forum day on the pass. It's a maximum of ten vehicles, the only downside for some members, is the fact that 110s are not allowed on the pass, there's a 100'' limit on wheelbase length

The bottom section of Gatesgarth isn't permit controlled. It was that section I was referring to in post above.

It's short - but right next to stile end and I think well worth it if you're there. You can drive up as far as the locked gate - which is a nice spot for a brew before coming back down. The best views are on the way down.

Sorry for all the questions but I'm trying to get a route together for a couple of days in March.

Do you have a grid reference for the start of this one?

Also the parka moor one, how extreme is it, we are likely to have a couple of D3s, is it wide enough, they don't mind a challenge, just don't want it too be damaging

Any photos kicking round of stile end or parkamoor? 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6
