morning all - apologies for resurrecting an old post but its the same topic!

i'm off to look at 2 defenders today, an 08 and an 07 - question - the 07 has been off the road for potentially 18 months.

is there anything specific to look for on it?

When you say off road, do you mean on a farm or stored dry off road... There's a big difference

If farm based, give the chassis a knock should sound hollow, otherwise may be full of mud and silt .. Walk away the chassis rot from the inside

Thanks for the early response! I'm not sure yet to be honest, I need to quiz the seller. The only thing I'm going off is it hasn't been taxed since august 2012.

So thought i would give an update...

slightly deflated, had built up hopes! - the chassis looked good, no clutch or egr valve noise, smooth gear box and engine pulled nice but....

Brake disks were in poor condition, tyres were poor, rear brakes were binding and both drivers and passenger side foot wells were soaking (and hasn't actually been much rain) Big Cry

so - eyes still open for something else but haven't completely ruled it out.

Regarding poor condition brake discs and a period of sitting idle/off road. We had a 18 month old Disco that sat going nowhere for a couple of months and when I fired it up the brake discs were so rusty it made some truly horrid noises for the first few miles.

Even if you have to replace/refurbish the braking system on a Defender - that might be preferable to dealing with a rotten chassis?

If the Defender is ex-Farm be aware that cow poo slurry really eats the steelwork - so look out for evidence of a dairy farmer from the West of the country with a sticker on the window for Friesian, Holstein or Ayrshire cattle societies. I bought an ex-farm non-Land Rover pick up and at 3 years old the underside was showing signs of serious corrosion.
