Views on Tablet for mapping
I've been using a mixture of phone and sat nav with an old net book linked via bluetooth to Mem Map - This has worked well for years but sadly the netbook had died -

I'd love to use my ipad but I only have a wifi version so no GPS ?

Whilst I'd love to get a iPad mini with 3g - I cannot justify this at this time - ( too many other toys to get )

I have been looking at 7" Android tablets - and the 2 that seem to rate highly are Samsung Galaxy Tab2 or Nexus 7

Both can be bought relatively cheap - -

Anyone using these for on board mapping - likely to be Mem Map and Viewranger

or any other recommendations

I use as a GPS backup a Samsung Galalxy Tab with Sygic GPS software with good results (also used to see movies and ear music and other uses).

My 1st choice is my old Garmin 60CSX due the free maps availability.

Why not use a bluetooth GPS linked to your iPad? Cheers, Vincent

I bought a Samsung galaxy tan 7.7 for this very purpose.
Larger screen size than the dedicated Satnavs I could find, but sits nicely in the middle of the dash without obscuring too much of the view. I originally wired it in to also feed music to the head unit, but have never bothered using this.
Use copilot Satnav software, works well for on road. Have mm tracker to use my memory map maps off road but not really used that part in anger yet.

I didn't think bluetooth GPS worked with wifi-only iPads? Darren

Bluetooth GPS receivers do work with iPads, I have various satnav apps on mine. However, in order to be able to use them you have to jailbreak the device and get the Bluetooth stack and interface from Cydia. I'm not sure if a Bluetooth stack is available on the AppStore. 2015 90 XS CSW TDCi - Beautiful

Have a look on iphonehacks.com. It all depends which iOS you're running, the latest iOS isn't jailbroken as far as I know but earlier versions should still be able to be jailbroken. If you're thinking of doing it let me know and I'll give you some tips and point you in the right direction for various tweaks needed. Thumbs Up 2015 90 XS CSW TDCi - Beautiful

Me too, I bought the 7" version which is now at £129 Shocked add a defender case for £35 and you are good to go!

I got mine mainly for walking as I have the car sorted, and its a far better size screen than the dedicated satnavs out there. The memory map android map is free (as are most of them) and I already had the latest maps. Installed them on an sd card I had and works out of the box.

One benefit of the android setup (apart from the price) is that you can turn off the 'assisted gps' which you can't do on the ipad/phone setup. This means that the gps is using satellites all the time rather than initially searching for a position using wifi and/or phone masts as the ipad/phone is. That way if you are in a low phone signal area the iphone takes ages to get a fix and where the Samsung Galaxy tab uses the satellites and fixes much quicker (and holds onto it better) When I take it out of the pocket so see how lost I am its on target virtually straight away and works perfectly in woodland which my old Garmin didn't.

You can cobble together a setup to use a non 3g ipad but if you want to use it out of the car your stuffed a bit (and you probably will). If you already have an ipad then maybe that's a plan, but the way I read the opening post - you wanted recommendations between the Samsung Galaxy and the Nexus, rather than other options.

As far as the choice between the two - I had the same choice and on the face of it the Nexus is a better specced machine (newer version of android, more pixels, a bit faster etc ) The Samsung downloads the newer version when you turn it on so no worries there. The Samsung is a bit cheaper I believe, but the most important issue for your intended use is that Nexus owners are reporting issues with the gps. I have read this on tech and review sites - I don't know what the issues are but Google are 'looking into it' . I guess the majority of users don't ever use the gps apart from to see where the nearest Nandos is so probably not an issues for them, but for our usage is fairly crucial the gps works without issue.

So its a no brainer really - get the Samsung before they sell out, the 7" is perfectly adequate and has worked perfectly for me on several test trips. The screen clarity is find, especially bearing in mind the fairly low resolution of the os maps when zoomed in) Obviously you can get the more expensive 'note' model but no real need if you just want a nav system. And make sure you get a hard case - preferably an Otterbox Defender as the tab is very thin and I think would break in bits if you dropped it. The otterbox has the benefit of a hard screen cover you clip on, so no issues chucking it in a bag. Some of the other hard cases leave the screen exposed (under a thin screen protector) which defeats the object of encasing the rest in a hard case in my book.

If you plan to use it in the car then simply get one of the mounts I bought for £25 and you are good to go. (plus there's no problem picking up gps with the heated windscreen)

Have fun

FYI - you don't need to jailbreak ipad for GPS.

Get a Garmin Glo

Works out of the box, and picks up US and GLONASS GPS nets. Not the cheapest at ~£80 but works well

Not keen on the idea of jail breaking the iPad. What does this actually do to the iPad. Defender 110 County SW
