Re: Try this
Thank you for the Info i will check the MAF and report back.

Unplug the mass airflow meter.

It's in between the air box and the turbo.

After a few seconds of driving the car will use the ECU preset safe fuelling instead of relying on the MAF. For the first few seconds its gonna drive slow and bad acceleration then it goes like fxxj

If the Defender then runs great, buy a new MAF sensor fit and enjoy. Don't run long term with no MAF you will waste fuel and be under and over fuelling depending on the revs
............

To test the waste gate use some mole grips on the actuator rod that goes towards the turbo, push it firmly towards the bulkhead of the car, if it moves in and out waste gate is fine

.............

The injector loom is £35 ish, if you can't remember when. It was last done just do it, they last two to three years then start leaking through the loom and can make a mess of the ECU so treat as a service item every two to three years methinks
My guess is kangaroo ing or jerky power spluttering, more than likely the MAF

Thanks to Tucker and everyone.else here. I tried the turbo wastegate, and it was indeed pretty much seized. A bit of 3-in-1 oil, a few wiggles with the molgrips and it's sorted. Cost 2p! Excellent. Thanks again.

Cleaned out the MAP sensor on the manifold with still no joy, next is the wastegate and MAF sensor.

Certainly sounds like the waste gate, I experienced all the symtoms desribed new loom, ECU plug off and cleaned, but still missing at the top end in each gear,
Eventually mine stared seriously misfiring and fortunatley managed to get back to our local garage who remedied the problem identified on their diagnostic gizmo as a siezed wastgate.
A year down the road it's still fine pulls really well massive difference Thumbs Up
Get out the mole grips

DRW I built a garage for my Mini
With a place for everything and everthing in its place.
Ten years down the line there's a Mini in there somewhere, and Censored all's where it should be!!!! Ho hum

Thanks to everyone for all the useful info and videos i overcame my fear of breaking the wastegate and found it was jammed..
Well i think the splutter is gone, went for a drive and she seems to be pulling a lot better too.
I got a new MAF sensor but once i replaced it i also gave the wastegate another push pull to find it was completely jammed up, so i sprayed a combination of GT85 and WD40 until it released and now all seems to be running sweet.

Below is a list of replaced/fixed parts that got me to the end eventually.

1st was the cleaning out of the ECU which had oil sat in the red plug
2nd was the replacement of the injector loom which had oil ingress right through and the ecu has been cleaned out every fortnight since
3rd A new fuel filter and fuel return hose was replaced due to rust on the filter and leaking hose.
4th MAP sensor on manifold was removed and thoroughly cleaned out
5th MAF sensor replaced
6th the wastegate released as it was jammed

Hope this can help someone else

what is it that sticks with this wastegate, is it the valve bit or the section in the manifold, i am sure mine is sticking/stiff but not sure what to try to free up

Where the thing piece of rod goes into the round actuator. it jams in the actuator, meaning the wastegate stays shut (or partially closed) and thus the boost can't be leaked off to keep within what its been set at, and then you get the overboost.

diesel_jim what sort of force is necessary to actuate this? If i put a pair of grips on the rod, with all my force i can move the arm about 1-2cm, does that sound right ?

You'll need grips to move it, yes.

Ian @ IRB did a youtube video clip showing it <-----
