South Africa 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 CSW Blenheim Silver
Loose pillar/roof section bolts
Hi all,
I took delivery of my 2010 2.4 Puma yesterday.
As the day progressed I started to get a squeaking/rattle which seemed to come from the door pillar.
At first I thought it might have been the roof rack which they swopped over from my TD5, especially when I put my hand out of the window and pulled down on it and the noise got better.

After further investigation it became obvious that the roof section bolts connecting it to the body had come loose.

I took it to my local dealer who sorted it out straight away under warranty.

Has anybody else had this problem with a newish vehicle?
Is it likely to reoccur, especially as I do some serious off roading?

In all the years that I have run older Defenders, I have never had this problem.

Had to tighten all mine too a few months back .... so i assume they had worked loose over time??

All got a wee drip of threadlock this time Wink Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

Thats LR QC for you.......when I bought mine I went through all the nuts and bolts I could find. You will be amazed at what I found either loose or missing.

For example: the anti roll bar bolts were finger tight - 19mm IIRC?. (I was able to remove them with my fingers.) I noticed them when I was standing behind the vehicle. Dont know how LR missed them in their pre delivery checks.......This is what caused me to check everything.

I would say out of all the bolts I checked at least 30 to 40% of them needed tightening. Some were even missing. I never checked the bolts you are talking about though. (guess what Im doing this weekend)

Another thing I did was to remove all the rubber mats, and put lights under the vehicle when it was dark. This showed all the gaps in the panels, between the doors etc etc. Some needed tightening/re aligning, some needed weather seal tape, some needed silicon.

I now have a dust free Landy.

I had the same problem, kept finding nuts everytime i cleaned it, the the rattles in the back started after about 2k miles, took it back and was told when i collected that all but 4 had come loose and fallen off behind the trim. since then ive done around 6k miles and the rattles are coming back, just need to get around to fitting nylocs instead. my cubby box is used now to collect all the bits that drop off. still wouldnt have anything else tho. Very Happy

Boet, LR Stellenbosch found out the entire top section of the tub was only holding on by one secured bolt. This was 2 yrs after we bought the 90 and 2 overland trips fully loaded with RTT, jerrycans, etc.

please excuse my ignorance Froggy. Embarassed I may have a similar problem. How do you gain access to the bolts?

Access is easy once you've got the side, rear and speaker panel trim out the way. Steve.

I know how to get rid of the speaker and rear(small) window trim but how do you get the large sliding window trim off without destroying clips etc....?

Yep!

Mine too! most of the tub to roof bolts loose and some nuts rattling around in the channel....result, water leaks everywhere!!! I don't think that they forgot to tighten them, more that they just sneck them up as the are frightened of distorting the roof sides as the tub is much more rigid also distortion could cause leaks at the woefully inadequate foam gasket.
