Still sorting mine. TBH I have some very similar to Phoenix90's

I have been playing with the gopro time lapse collections today, I am up to "Alta to Honningsvag".

We are going back in 2014, but we are not venturing too far north next time, we will be exploring mid Norway with our friends from Oslo.

Cheers

Mike - not on my trip. They were on an organised trip. It was an accident by all accounts. Mark was unlucky.

have a look here, full details on homepage http://www.mudrut.co.uk/

Fair enough. I heard a story about it which wasn't quite the same as that account (!)

Hey Luismi,

Half or dozen or so, that I know of, on here have done the trip so you'll get plenty of advice.

In terms of distance we had a mix, our longest day way a little over 800km, had quite a few around 600k.

The only problem with these distances is you have to be prepared that weather etc. may get in the way and prevent you making your daily distance and have a plan b. We carried a database with campsites that were open at this time of year that had cabins on with us so we could always go somewhere else if needed, or if the worse came to it then just check into the nearest hotel.

I wouldn't be to worried about planning 600k days, I know the other guys that go do similar distances and i'm sure BPman's group were probably the same.

When are you planning on going? If it is a dash to the north with a couple of days sightseeing etc. then 19 days should be plenty. We did the round trip in 14 and had 7 nights up north, 3 in Tromso, 1 in Abisko and 3 in Kiruna.

Happy to send you itinerary details if it helps Thumbs Up

Luismi,

Phoenix is right, we had a mix of long and short driving days. We were lucky with the weather, having only 3 days of snow (no blizzards). Something to consider, we arrived at Esbjerg and drove to Copenhagen then caught a ferry to Oslo, this saved us time and was not expensive but check timings because it was a bit of a rush to Copenhagen, but in theory you could take a ferry from another port and arrive in southern Norway. We did the same on the way back from from Oslo to Frederikshaven that gave us plenty of time to get to Esbjerg.

I think our longest days drive was 750kms, took about 12 hours. there are average speed cameras on parts of the E6, plus you can't safely drive fast on ice with a fully loaded defender and stop in time to avoid wildlife.

your route looks fine to me

After discussing all things Norwegian with Phoenix, i copied Kris's idea and I wrote a roadbook with a day-by-day list of start / end points and a small map, overnight accommodation info, room for notes. This also had police/fire/ambulance/recovery/bank/next of kin/land rover assistance number/Norwegian road law information/webasto instructions/gopro instructions etc.... it was good to leave a copy with family in the UK, they would then know where you are. This also kept the Norwegian customs happy.

It's worth taking some spares: starter/alternator/CV/UJ/fan belt/Bulbs, although the garages have good mechanics, parts may take a few days.

Remember - it's a road trip on ice, both Phoenix and I used proper studdable cooper snow types, not just M&S but soft compound, snow groove tyres with sipes. they won't defy the laws of physics but are made for these conditions. there's lots of discussion on tyre choice and I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to tell me that mud tyres are just as good.

I don't want to bore you with spares lists etc, PM me if you have any other questions

Just out of interest, what story did you hear and where did you hear it from?

I think dedicated snow tyres with studs in are probably better than the KM2's that I was on however, I don't believe either of the two people that had the studs used them, but carried them in the back.

I guess if you have a thousand pounds to spend on a set of tyres for one trip then it's certainly worth having them, but if I had the tryes and the studs I would have used them both. Studs sitting in a box in the back of the truck aren't much use when you are sliding sideways on ice.

Just my opinion. Wink

Regards,

Mark

I think buying specific tyres would be worthwhile, it may save yo ass. Then there is always other people doing the trip who could be potential customers... And so on. Cool
