Following in on from Glynn's comments in regards to necessity and preference I have always used the Mantec metal air intake / snorkle both with and without a rollcage.
As a long standing user of byways and UCR's the only issue i have had is where low hanging foliage catches the mushroom top and can pull the air intake to one side or the other, someting tearing the rubber hose. Land Rover Owner magazine had a similar write up in one of their articles (plastic version with the mushroom top) and managed to pull theirs off. So one day whilst watching an Australian Extreme 4x4 DVD i set about a plan to keep the original wing mounted section (all sealed and no wish to either force it off the wing nor to cut a hole in the wing top). I then bought a metre length of turbo piping (70mm OD) via ebay and a 90 degree silicone hose. The roof line section has a stainless steel mesh fitting inside and is angled down whilst the end has a cap welded in place. The stainless steel brackets were made by my brother and pick up the original A pillar mounting brackets that i had left in place once i had fitted the cage. The result is that it fits as close to the cage as i could make it. There is no loss in performance as the 90 will still cruise at 75 mph, 90 mph is still do-able (fast enough for me!) For me personally it's now one thing i dont have to watch out for  with the added advantage that i can swap to the original if i felt the need.

In Australia 80% of 4B's with raised air intakes would have Safari snorkels. I have one on my Defender and were fitted to my two Toyata 4X4's. They are UV resistant and cope with the Australian sun very well. They also stand up to the outback roads. Support the colonials - buy Australian!

Could be...I am Mr average 6' and don't have mud rail extensions etc so my seat is in a normal position (picture taken as I would normal driving position view)  |

Ah
Just taken another of mine to check...

If you want a snorkel/ raise air intake get the biggest one you can find!!!
