NOLDEN GEN2 Headlights
Hi, I’ve just installed the Gen2 Nolden headlights with DRL. Bought from House of Urban and it’s sold as a kit, they assured me everything was included to do the job.

On delivery they have the standard H4 connector and also a loom to wire in the DRL’s & position light.

I know the legality that the DRL’s must dim or stitch off when headlights are on etc but the only cables available on the loom are 2 +ve’s for DRL and position light and a -ve. See wiring diagram.

I suppose my question is do they simply need wired into switched live and the headlight has all the tech in or do I need to buy a separate DRL controller?

You need a switched live.
I decided the easiest way was to buy one of the cheap controllers that sense battery voltage and use that to drive the DRL. I got the feed for this from the alternator..
I did not bother with a sidelight feed to dim the DRL when the sidelights are on, TBH i never run with just sidelights so didn’t see the point…

Same here. Bought a simple DRL controller and wired the DRLs through that.

Cheers I’ll get one ordered. Saying that I did wire the DRL to a perm supply and when I turned the headlight on the DRL turned off. So technically if I change perm supply to a switched live won’t that give the same results as a controller?

It sounds from your description that the headlamp unit itself takes care of switching the DRL off when the lights are switched on, so all you need to do is find a switched live and wire that in.

On my Td5 there is a loom by the brake master cylinder which has a white/green wire, which indicates ignition live. for my DRL install I tapped into this wire to give me a supply to the relay I used to control my lights. A relay was necessary in my installation to cut supply to the DRL when the side lights were on.

All done at last. Ordered a DRL controller from Amazon to make sure they dim when the sidelights come on.

Switched live taken from the thick orange cable running into the heater box, ground direct to battery. Line taken from the red sidelight feed to activate the DRL dimming function on the controller.

All that’s left to do is wrap the wires in conduit to tidy it up.

They don’t, they’re usual headlights plus DRL and position light if needed.
When I was looking at controllers you could get ones that turned off one DRL depending what way you were indicating and another made them strobe when you use the horn 😂
