My last VCV didn't last 5000 miles, in my case the defender would just dye/engine stop without a reason.
My son helped me change it. My hands wouldn't fit in there.

Good luck.

dunno about that, the 130 has a shower heat exchanger on that wing!

on my 90 last one took about 15mins!

anyway changed it this pm.

on startup the usual slight hiccup then idle nice and smooth.

Turned it off. Cleaned up, started it to move it and very erratic idle and i could hear the pressure relief valve releasing. although it stops rattling and shaking above idle speed there is no power to drive it.

its almost like new VCV was a goodun and it worked fine then on subsequent restart when the PRV was cracking open it learnt a new idle which is obviously no good.

so PRV or another VCV?

do you need to bleed anything if you change the PRV? Cheers

I thought the PRV was a single use component and needs replacement once it’s let off?

I did my PRV recently. Didn’t need special tools and it self bled on startup. Would recommend a new tail fitting whilst you’re at it as these are weak and might not last being swapped over. You will also get all the copper washers you need if you replace the tail too > 110 XS Double Cab

Cheers. Well it was going off repeatedly, looks like a change is in order. Good tip on tail parts. Cheers

so before doing anything, started it this morning.

started perfectly and ran smooth at idle.

Accelerated a little and pressure valve started clicking away and it dropped to a very erratic idle.

turned off.

cranked and cranked on start up but then ran normally at idle. but wont rev and is lumpy. Cheers

Once a PRV has activated it will not reset so must be replaced, however unless it was a defective PRV there must have been an over-pressure in order to "pop" it in the first place. If so, simply replacing the PRV is likely to achieve nothing since the new one will do its job and pop too.

The most likely cause of the PRV popping - yes, it's a defective VCV.

Remember that the purpose of the VCV is to regulate the flow of fuel from the LP stage of the fuel pump to the HP stage and thereby regulate the fuel rail pressure. There is no other means of regulating the pressure in the fuel rail.

Are you able to monitor the fuel rail pressure in real time? If the PRV has popped it is likely to be consistently low. Mind you if you can hear the valve chattering then it must be defective (although the fact that you can hear it over the racket the engine makes is surprising and makes me wonder just how much noise it must be making)!

Prv was popping away constantly when on lumpy idle and accelerating.

I removed vcv, fitted a 2nd one, none denso for pjones and it started well, runs well. Been for a 10min test drive, tomorrow.will tell.

Prv def going with last vcv. Havent changed it. Cheers

I found the new VCV settled on mine after about 20 - 30 miles, PRV is still original on mine but wasn’t faulty, though I expect if I had not replaced the VCV at that point I’d have probably had the PRV issue as a result of the VCV.

Mine came from PF Jones too, it came in a Nissan Genuine parts box so obviously interchangeable part but has been good ever since.
I had a rough idle for a long time, but not overly noticeable. (More when very cold under 5.C
Top end power was lacking in particular in 6th, which was where for example you’d find you’ll offer drop back a gear on a long hi speed inline.

The real issue was engine cutting out, which would usually be whilst cold, low speed driving under 5mph or pulling off from a junction or roundabout giveaway which could be incredibly dangerous in certain situations.

So no programming needed when I changed mine, and PRV left alone.
When it actually got worse that was what it did.
It will self learn, needs to be clean, clean, clean but isn’t too difficult to get at luckily.

Back (i.e., bulkhead) end of the fuel rail.

Just to close the thread, vcv change resolved the issue, works as it should for last month or so. Prv not changed despite having actuated. Cheers

Part of the problem is counterfeit parts I believe. Even when you think you are buying genuine Denso, often they are not. There are many cases of this reported all over the internet (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=suction+control+valve+denso+fake) and I recently fell foul to it myself.
My below photograph shows a genuine Denso VCV box on the left and a fake on the right.

I was having typical VCV lumpy running issues so ordered and fitted what I thought was a genuine Denso VCV only to find the high pressure relearn would not complete and the vehicle ran like sh*te.

Sourced a genuine real Denso VCV which cured the issues instantly.
