Half shaft doesn’t want back in
First time pulling out rear half shaft today to replace bearings. Following this very nice illustrated guide: https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/10286-rear-wheel-bearing-defender/

No big problems for a while, that doesn’t happen often… until I pulled out the half shaft, marveled at the funny noise it makes swishing out of the tube. Pulled it out slowly, then tried to push it back in just out of curiosity… and it doesn’t go in all the way. About 10cm from the end it goes clonk and doesn’t want any further in. Any ideas what happened there?

Rotate it through different positions, it’ll just be slightly out of alignment with the splines in the diff. If needs be, jack up the rear axle and rotate the pinion flange of the diff to get the splines to move. It’ll definitely go back in, I had the same fun once and just needed to rock the vehicle forwards slightly. Charlie

Thanks, I hope you’re right Smile

Incidentally, you did make a very good point to me here… it happened that I had the rear of the vehicle off the ground anyway when I started this job. I crossed my mind that there could be an alignment issue, and then I went and rotated the wheel on the other side a bit. But now I’m not sure that this actually makes the right sort of difference … would it?

I’ve left it alone for the day, will get back to it tomorrow to play around a bit more. Would certainly like to see that half shaft slip back in for peace of mind before I do anything else!

Keep trying and be gentle. It’ll definitely pop back in, it just needs patience! Charlie

Make sure you put clean diff oil on the splines nearest the diff too that will help, and if it doesn’t go all the way home ever so slightly rotate the halfshaft until it slips in the splines on the diff. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

the 1/2 shaft is quite heavy and the diff end will tend to drop towards the floor as you insert it into the axle, try lifting it up as you insert it the last few inches, are they 1 piece or separate flanged, it is easier with the flange fitted DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

This is a 2011 Puma 130 and the flanges are separate from the half shafts - wouldn’t “one piece” and “flanged” refer to the same type where the flange is part of the half shaft and therefore the whole thing is in one piece? I can totally be wrong, don’t know much about different type half shafts Smile

Thanks for the tip about lifting it up, I’ll give that a try. I didn’t realise there would be any slack for them to drop downwards.

10cm sounds like you aren't even close to engaging the splines but are hitting the diff carrier outer bearings.

Unfortunately you are fighting gravity and leverage isn't on your side. You need to fit the end of the halfshaft through the centre of the bearing to reach the diff splines so will have to fish around a bit until you get in the hole (sounds familiar.... Rolling Eyes ). Don't be scared of damaging anything at the diff end, it's all solid bits of metal. The only thing to be careful of is the stub axle oil seal.

Sounds like lifting it up somehow should be the ticket - I’m sure I’ll manage that now I know what I’m looking at. Funny though, I saw several instructions posted here and there, and other than “slip the half shaft back in” none of them focused on this problem. Glad I asked!

You are correct, yours has a separate shaft and flange, however you can get a single piece shaft with flange. See link https://lofclutches.com/shop/misc/defender...ve-shafts/

Thanks for confirming. I was mainly surprised by the distinction “is it a one-piece or flanged”, since I thought these two were the same thing and perhaps different from “two-piece” or whatever. Anyway… interesting that this one-piece replacement exists, I didn’t know that. Fortunately my half shaft looks pretty good right now and I don’t think it needs to be replaced just yet.

I always call them one piece or two piece, no confusion then.

One piece is the halfshaft and flange as a single piece.

Two piece is the halfshaft and flange.

Both do the same job, I have Ashcroft 2 piece on mine on the rear and Ashcroft flanges on the front.

As with everything personal choice and owner preference prevails.

LR’s one piece rear halfshafts price is phenomenal, indeed Ashcroft 2 piece are pricey too.

Many swear by Britparts 1 piece rear halfshafts and paint the flanges and is good value too. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Forgot to say yesterday - all good with the half shaft, it went back in easily enough once I knew which direction to push it. Wiggling it round a bit with some pressure to raise it up at the diff end did the trick. Thanks for the hints!
