Fuel Gauge
Hi All

I am looking for a bit of help with the fuel gauge , I was driving today with a good quarter tank and only going local. After about 5 mins the fuel gauge started to drop steadily with the light coming on and then hitting empty. Got out and checked for a leak but nothing so continued with the journey with no other issues.
Got back home and turned the engine off - back on but the gauge stays on the empty and does not move.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

I had this problem. Turned out a wire on the float in the diesel pump had broke. Pump out cleaned up and blue wire connected,,bingo.

Interesting actually. My 110 is a 300tdi but with a later td5 type plastic tank and RoW fuel level sender and pick-up fitted.
Wired it in to my 300tdi loom and gauges and all worked spot on for over a year until it suddenly jammed on hard full. This lasted about 6 months until it equally as suddenly started to work again?
I did poke around all the connectors and gauges etc but couldn't find a fault, although the gauge would work properly when the correct wire was shorted to earth..... Never did find out why.

Why ‘RoW’ level sender? I ask because I have the same sort of set up - a 300Tdi, but a later plastic tank.

I went with the Td5 gauge to try and pair the gauge and sender better, but I think there must be something else in the Td5 wiring to damp oscillations. The gauge works, and reads more or less Ok, but the needle swings about as the level in the tank changes (up/down hill, round corners etc).

I have asked about this before, but I think the answer was something to do with measuring resistance (complicated - for me!).

Would a RoW sender do the same thing? Donald

The Td5 speedo damps the fuel gauge signal and drives the Td5 gauge.

All Defender senders before the 2.2 Puma are the same electrical spec and are all therefore compatible with any pre 2.2 gauge/cluster.

So a pre-Td5 gauge can be used with any pre 2.2 sender.

The plastic tank “99MY ROW” 300 Tdi sender unit was used on the 2.4 Puma.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks Martin,

I think you replied to my last post on this as well. Electrics isn’t my strong suit.

If I understand what you’ve said, then by going back to a 300Tdi era gauge I’d get a better match between gauge and sender?

I don’t have the Td5 speedo or cluster installed to damp the signal. Donald

If you don’t fit the Td5 speedo you can’t really use the Td5 fuel gauge. Use a pre-Td5 gauge which is internally damped.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I might be wrong but doesn't a td5 tank sender include an in tank lifter pump? The RoW sender is without the pump as that is on the engine.
