What tyres are you running? If you have mud tyres they are probably the culprit.

There are so many ways for a Defender steering to feel strange.
What are the basics? What tyres, and how old are they?
What are the symptoms? Pulling to one side? Under acceleration and under braking? Vibrations?
How old are the shock absorbers (possibly one is defect)? 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

Panhard Rod bushes sometimes gets missed.

The one closest to the steering box is more obvious to spot if you watch it and someone rocks the steering. The opposite side is harder to spot.

Almost cheaper to replace the whole thing unless you have a friendly garage who will press them out for beer tokens.

SuperPro or similar bushes will enable you to do the job yourself in the future.

If the vehicle has been lifted but the radius arms not replaced with cranked versions you may find that the steering wont return to centre.

And if the above is the case the bushes right behind the axle (not chassis) could be deformed as the camber will be out.

Finally the anti roll bar ball joints may be past their best and dried out. Also easy missed unless removed and checked by hand....

Good luck.

Tyres are continental almost new. Vehicle is totally standard with 70,000 miles.
The issues are..the steering becomes light at around 70mph and feels unsafe. I can feel a click occasionally in the steering wheel like something is snapping. The passenger side feels more positive than the driver side. When going over a small bump in the road it makes a racket. It seems like garages just repair what they see and don't fully investigate the problem. Spent best part of £700 and still the same. Just wanted to see if anyone would drive it and compare theirs...
My stools are fine by the way Rolling with laughter

You checked the nut on the steering arm is tight?

I had a similar 'wandering' feel and it had worked loose. Rgds.

Have you checked the front shock absorbers are tight and the holes have not elongated?

My bet is on the shock absorbers.

Your description sounds similar to what we experienced about six years ago. The sensation was subtle but had a profound effect. We both started feeling a sort of car-sickness, and couldn´t think why. At first I suspected emission gases creaping into the cabin. Then I heard an occasional noise from the front left.

One of Koni HTR´s had lost oil and had some play.

Climb on the front bumper bar and bounce up and down. See if you sense a difference between the two sides.
Even with uprated springs and stiff Konis, it was obvious once we were looking for it. 1998 Tdi 90 SW,

check the bracket that holds the lower part of the box to the chassis support.

what are tyre pressures.

so its only at 70mph? not evident at other speeds? Cheers
