I use pest expert in poison bait boxes, it works well.
But remember once the rodent is poisoned it remains harmful to anything that eats it. Also, please make sure the poison isn’t accessible to be eaten by birds. Ride like you stole it!! If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do… 2011 2.4 Puma 90 HT |

Same problem my parents have.
I am afraid I can’t help about poison but one thing which has helped my parents is just making the garden less inviting. We took the bird table away as the rats seemed to be coming into their garden to feed from the free seed supply. We blocked up the holes under the shed so there was nowhere to nest or breed. We had a good result from traps but it only got the young rats. The older ones seemed a bit more streetwise 
Their neighbours regularly chuck leftover food out their door for the birds and thus this is why they have a rat problem. |

Rats come to get things to eat and dont just wander about admiring your lawn. They go where there is food. So its not necessarily something you can blame on anyone. Look for what is attracting them first and remove it. Then take an on line pest control course. These are about £50 and an hour or so of time. That tells you all about it and gets you a certificate to allow you to purchase professional poison and use it in the most effective and safe way. Or you can pay someone to do it for you.

Formula B from Pest Expert as linked above.
Been using it on and off for a few years when rats appear and it always does the job. You do need to be patient and keep refilling your bait boxes etc until the rats stop taking it. Not according to DEFRA. http://adlib.everysite.co.uk/adlib/defra/c...93RRD547JA Brodifacoum is the active ingredient in Formula B+ Difenacoum is the active ingredient in Neosorexa Gold. These are also the same active ingredients used in many of the 'Professional Only' poisons. Where Difenacoum does come out better is that is marginally less harmful to non-target species. All of them are nasty though, and kill other things further up the food chain. |

The only trouble with poison is you dont know where they'll go to die and rot.
I've always humane trapped (in case you get something that isnt a rat) and then taken for a swim. If you can do it safely and legally, an air rifle can be effective, then you don't have to worry about the dog or cat eating the poisoned rat?

Don’t poison rats or any other animal that can be tempted to eat it.
The animal will suffer horrifically and will die in agony as well as you will have no idea where the corpse will end up. Spend the money on a professional service or raise the issue with the local council if it’s a neighbours property. Poisoning animals creates a worse case scenario than allowing them to roam. |

We used snap tracks on the farm with chocolate on the spring, kills them pretty quickly and no risk of poisoning up the food chain (since we stored grain for food we didn't take the risk of any bait). We also stuck them well out the way of the dogs and other wildlife, usually down the gullys behind the sheds where they would run. I once got one that was over 1ft long, that was a proper big  of a rat. |
