I've had the Ashcroft 4 speed installed, suits the defender well and is as smooth as you would need. There is the torque lock (out of my depth now) that to me is like an overdrive, at 55 mph the revs drop from just over 2200 ish to 1800 ish. Its not a performance car so it works well, feel solid and the console matched the dash perfectly. My reason for the mod was due to my wifes knee, I was in danger of having to sell so this was a great solution. The manual was fine for me, but I do like the auto though!
