Cheers. The video isn't so much of a list of demands but just something to try and shift the conversation a bit. I think LR could have made the new Defender appeal if they'd marketed it from an engineering perspective. Granted that isn't the type of market they're going for, but the Grenadier most certainly is, as the more they say the more it is what I want to hear. The discussion around things like independent suspension vs beam axles is moot. Some people want one type, some the other. LR left beam axles behind, so where do the people go who want them? Can't buy the 70 series in the UK. The Grenadier say they've watched my video after a lot of people sent it to them and told me their response. I doubt it'll have an impact as they've probably made their decisions already. Manual transmissions will become a dead technology with the rise of electric vehicles, but a man can dream! Will - How big a market do you think there still for a utility vehicle above what’s offered by the ubiquitous double cab pick ups and the various Land Cruisers?

Well the UN fleet of 4x4s and light trucks is estimated between 60,000 and 80,000, then you pile on all the NGOs (ICRC and MSF will have thousands), then there's the Australian mining industry. Maybe the US industries (which have tended to stick to their own if you can crack that market). Then you've got the militaries. There are quite a few countries that use the Defender/Wolf. Some of the big users of Defenders outside the UK are Israel and Mexico.
The 15-20k a year production of the Defender starts to seem quite small compared to that, of which many would be private buyers. The UN would probably replace every 4-5 years, so 20K vehicles a year. They would go for the 70 series for the "boots on the ground" stuff then the 100 series for the armoured, "comfort" vehicles for senior management. Certainly looks promising, keeping the classic look, but with some subtle but significant changes. The wheel arch spats are much smaller, so I hope the body is wider, allowing a pallet in the back of the pick up?
Full depth windscreen. Not a fan of the grille, I have always preferred the series look at the front, but this is a minor job to change. Thinks like hinges and trim look more substantial. Would love to test drive one for a month on the farm and see How it behaves and what niggles there are. The engineering, ie; transmission seems to be well thought out. My thoughts too. I like the G Wagon but always thought it a bit too boxy but this looks to be a good blend of all three, so for me it’s a thumbs up. In my view this is exactly what the new Defender should have looked like. |
