This will be appreciated by most Defender owners
An interesting article that I think will appeal to many of us Defender drivers, in part due to the classic design and technology and in part to the bygone golden age of travel:

Solari boards: The disappearing sound of airports https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-51470599 Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

Nice. The sound was always useful to signal an update. I suppose the visual effect & sound could be recreated digitally.
I've noticed Nixie tubes/clocks are making a bit of a comeback...

That was a great sound, I remember it more from railway stations rather than airports though. James

And there was always one of the little flaps that was stuck so the word or number was impossible to read Laughing

Never realised that they weren't there anymore? Something that was taken for granted and is now no more Sad

Cant recall the last time I honestly remember seeing one (and some of my younger colleagues have never seen one), but evoques memories of being a child visiting New Street station with some friends. Their dad worked for BR in the control room and changed the board to display a welcome message for us all. 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

I used to commute to London Bridge. The platform clocks were the 7 segment types. Very relaxing listening to the ticking noise while waiting for the train.

I remember these as well & nostalgia. I reminisced about them with our son who was born in 93, they form one of his earliest memories from ’94. We both agree that they were good. Besides them being visual, the sound was also useful for attracting attention. I cannot recall recently seeing a working one although I have seen some retired or broken ones in recent years.

I bet they took some maintenance, especially when they got old.

I think most of this sort of stuff vanished at the back of the 90s into the 00s. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
