Got an amp, boxed sub, and a pair of crossovers if you need them. Just removed from mine.

Just fit an active sub and you’ll find the difference amazing (unless you are into car stereo ) go for a decent make and the sound is so much more rounded and it’s a perfect place to start and see if you want to go further. Ray

It all depends on what you want to achieve and spend? An active sub for approximately £150 will give a big improvement, more bass. Then I'd suggest tweeters in/on the top of dash.
There's plenty of room for amps and even sub boxes My personal choice is Alpine head units and focal speakers. Pioneer would be my other choice of head unit but then again in a defender SQ is never going to be competition winning |

I fitted an Alpine head unit, replaced the dash speakers with some Pioneer units too and fitted a Kenwood active sub. For the money it works well and I have no complaints. Having heard Barbell Jim's set-up, it's a massive improvement on my cheapo solution 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop

You don't need to spend much...
i'm running 4 of these (initially just ran 2 in the dash) https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00RXI...8&th=1 with this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01AUX...&psc=1 using standard wiring and it sounds fine... |

I have always used pioneer, I have used upgraded my defenders speakers to pioneer, the head unit I switched from the 306 as I bought a pioneer for a tenner and it works, I was going to fit it in the defender, but I thought it the 306 had my old one in, and still has the wiring so in it went.
