front axle swap
Will a 90's front axle fit a MY2009 defender 110? Are 90 and 110 front axles identical?

90's don't have vented discs for a start, so you'd have to swap those for the 110 vented ones.

I think the differential is different on the 90.

But the axle casings are the same I think.

It is the casing I need. Mine is bend after an accident. I can swap all the internals and bolt my swivels to the older casing.

As long as it’s of a similar age then it will fit. 2002-onwards should be okay.

110s post 2010 supposedly have the stronger 4-gear diff, but many don't. The diffs are interchangeable however.

It is frightening when someone turns over when you pass cars at 90 km/h,

From 1994 onwards the defender and discovery 1 front axle had wide radius arm bushes fitted.

Therefore any 1994 onwards 90, 110 or disco 1 axle will fit your 110 (providing ARB mounts are present).

Depending on what year axle you buy you may need to swap the brake assembly from your original. Everything else will be the same. The '4 pin' diff was only fitted to the rear of a 110 from 2002 onwards, all defenders were fitted up front with a 2 pin.

TDCi Defenders with nominal 110 and 130 inch wheelbases were "upgraded" to a four-gear front diff as standard ostensibly from 2010, according to Landrover's build spec.

The experience of certain forum members however has made if very apparent that whilst some or even many left the factory with the four-gear Rover pattern diff, a significant number were still built with the 2 gear diff. It seems to be utter pot luck whether you have a 2 or 4 gear unit.

TDCi Defenders with the nominal 90 inch wheelbase always had 2 gear diffs, none were built with 4.

Another consideration if you are swapping axle casings around is to try to avoid the batch which has defective welds holding the end flanges onto the casing, and for which the reinforcing bits were retro-fitted on TSB.

It needs to be 2002-onwards as the bolts for the panhard rod changed size, as well as the rod itself changing from a solid forged rod with a bend in it to a straight one formed of hollow tube. The bracket welded to the axle casing is suitably larger to match, though you could in theory drill out the hole in an earlier one. The bolt size went up from M14 to M16.

Thanks so far. My chassis has a dent, so it could be I have to change the chassis for a new galvanised one. Is there a favorite constructor?

Assuming the main chassis rail is undamaged and not bent/misaligned, you can buy weld-on replacements for the radius arm brackets. For example:

there is a dent in the main chassis rail, just in front of the radius arm bracket. Bulhead moved to the rear, bracket from the torsion bar ripped out of the chassis, front axle bent...I should have to take off the body to mesure up the chassis, but I fear the worst.
