[Wanted] Looking for Td5 110 commercial +VAT
I am looking for a 110 Td5 commercial, a van ideally, but looking for one with a +VAT price so I reclaim the VAT element. Any suggestions where I might fine one - they are too old to come up regularly!

Cheers

Chris

eBay can have a few random ones pop up every now and then, what sort of commercial body are you after? Mod-sales.com can sometimes have a few. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Thanks. I am looking for a three door van body ideally. I would put up with a USW body if needs be.

Don't ignore any without vat to add, you have to pay the vat to be able to claim it back so if you don't pay it on the sale in the 1st place, there won't be any to claim. Therefore you won't be worse off. 2006 TD5110 station wagon

By being able to claim VAT back on the purchase price I expect to get the van 20% cheaper than by not doing so. So it might be a £12000 Defender but I'll pay £10000+ the £2000 VAT and claim the VAT back.

Perhaps someone has a view on this:

At some point in the life of a used vehicle many owners seem to think that they can charge the value of the vehicle + VAT. (Where the value of the vehicle is what a private customer thinks it is worth) I am not sure when this happens.

A new van (or car, or motorbike, or tin-opener) costing £10000 + VAT costs you £12000. If you are a business you can claim that VAT back, and when you sell the van you get, say £5000+£1000 VAT and pay the VAT to the revenue - the government does not charge you VAT on depreciation. If you were a private customer and had the same vehicle it would still be worth £6000 but there is simply no VAT to consider as that was paid to the government when you bought it.

Many businesses though, when they sell a vehicle, seem to look in Autotrader and see a van like theirs at £6k, no VAT and assume that theirs is worth £6k+VAT - which is simply not the case in my opinion.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Chris

Another point folk may be able to help with. Is my 90 worth more or less than a similar 110? Mine is a 150k 2005 Td5 HT with alloys, side steps and a few dents. When I sell my 90, should I expect to pay more or less for a 110 the same age? I find 'asking prices' somewhat variable, and IMHO ambitious!

Hi Chris,

If a business buys any asset where VAT is charged separately and reclaimed, then when it sells that asset it must charge VAT on it. If it bought it without reclaiming the VAT (e.g. from a non VAT registered business, or a private seller) then VAT cannot be reclaimed.

Cars (i.e. none commercial) have different rules for VAT. Also don't forget that private use of a company van is a taxable benefit - from memory £3230 without fuel. Also the company has to pay Class 1A NICs of 13.8% on the benefit as well.

So for one year there would be tax due of over £1k.

If you bought it privately you could charge the company for mileage and take that money tax free. I know of one person running a Defender who charges his company around £1 per mile (i.e. much more than the HMRC 54p mileage rate) as this reflect the true running cost as he tows a lot and has higher maintenance costs. HMRC seem to have accepted this.

I think it may be simpler to buy privately Very Happy

Thanks for the suggestion Mr Fudge. I think that my circumstances may differ from those of your friend, making the BIK worth the pain.

Cheers

Thanks Chris. The body type will not work for me sadly. ...nor the engine, nor the gearbox... Loads of Tdci available that might be ideal, perhaps I should extend my search...

It is quite an old vehicle you are looking for so the vat , no vat issue is a bit secondary to condition in my opinion. The 2 on the link above just highlight the spread of prices Shocked HR064 Hampshire and Berkshire 4x4 Response
