How do i replace the ignition switch, 2007 Puma??????
Hi,

I traced an intermittent starting problem down to the ignition switch on my defender.

I have a new switch and i'm now trying to change it.

Now with all Saturday morning gone, scraped and knuckles hair pulled and some new expletives thought up... I'm close to admitting defeat.

I have a PDF copy of the workshop manual, and it clearly states this:- 4. Remove single screw and withdraw ignition switch from steering column lock.

I have since found out that this is a joke from Landrover.

With the help of a dental mirror i can see that there is second screw on the far side of the switch, this corresponds with the two threaded holes in the new switch.

so... How the hell do i get to the screw to remove it?

I've thought about cutting the security bolts and then removing the complete lock assembly, but that seems a bit drastic.

Any advice would be appreciated..

Cutting the bolts and doing it off the vehicle is by far the easier approach. Replacement bolts are available for only a few pounds and ordinary bolts can be used as a short term measure to put it back together in the meantime. Darren

To be honest, i admitted defeat not long after my post.

New bolts on order.

i just hope i can cut the lock off without to much damage. I thought about drilling the old bolts out, but quickly realised i simply couldn't due to the shelf under the column..

I think they need to be cut/drilled. They are sheer bolts I believe. (The head snaps off when fitting them)

Get a clamp as well for a couple of quid and just cut the lot off

It's not actually a lot more work to remove the whole fascia, unlike modern cars where it's a days work to remove one, the Defender can be done in well under an hour.

Well, it took a while, but i ended up drilling from the bottom side and eventually ended up with this

I have a new bottom bracket on order plus bew shear bolts, BUT, i am also tempted to fit allan keys bolts instead.

Anyone know the thread size? Andy

Sheer bolts are there to stop the ignition being swapped in seconds for one the scum has with them, seconds or minuets and noise? Your choice, yes I know screwdrivers, hammers and brute force but if they want to be quiet then it’s a lot easier to swap a barrel as it’s sorta out the steering lock too. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

They are M8 bolts.
I have fitted them with normal bolts before but only because I didn't have any shear ones. Ideally I'd opt for the shear ones.
I've also taken out shear bolts that must not have had loctite on them so they just tapped out easy. So that's a couple of options if you're thinking of fitting with the idea of them coming out one day.

I guess i'm fortunate enough to live in a country where crime is relatively low..

Police have trouble convincing people not to leave the keys in the ignition. Andy

Patrick,

I thought i'd try any quantify this with a few figures... turned out to be harder than i thought...

I keep up to date with what goes on here, be it on facebook, or the local papers, or radio. i don't recall a car being nicked this year at all.

The last murder here was back in 2003, before that was back in the late 1970's.

Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect here.. There is it's fair share of low level burglaries, and thefts, but it is all minor stuff. We do have a small problem with drugs, but then where doesn't these days...

One of my other cars is left on the drive way unlocked as i need somewhere for parcels to be put if i'm out.

But, i digress.. i will be fitting the lock & new ignition switch tomorrow.. so, hopefully i'll be driving it again later (fingers crossed) Andy

Well this is a bit of a bummer… Finally got the new switch fitted and everything back in place. I took the car for a short trip of less than a mile and all was ok. I then took my daughter for a longer trip (about 20 miles) and within 10 minutes I had a real odd experience where I was driving at about 35/40 MPH in traffic, and, for what seemed to an age, but more than likely 2 seconds, the engine cut, the dash lights went out, including the green mileage LED window. The rev counter dropped to zero, even with the engine still turning as it was still in 4th gear and moving.

Then, it cut back in again and the car carried on driving. A very unnerving experience to say the least.
My guess is that my original fault of intermittent starting or not starting that I thought I’d pinned down to the actual ignition switch, could very well be something else in that area that I’ve yet to find.

But what to look for now??? Andy
