Hi Chaps,

After a few evenings googling, I've finially found details that French speed cameras can differentiate between standard vehicles and HGV's.

Here's a translated snippet from the following website.

https://translate.googleusercontent.com/tr...59n8IuoOHA

The discriminating radars appeared on the roads in 2011, since their number has steadily increased to reach more than 330 cabins today. They owe their name to this feature that allows them to flash at a different speed light vehicles (cars, motorcycles, van, etc.) and heavy goods vehicles (PL) by discriminating the vehicle type.

Unfortunately, the differentiation of the vehicle type is not always very reliable and many light vehicles are flashed below the maximum authorized speed because the radar consider them as heavy goods vehicles! However, vehicles considered as heavy goods vehicles must have a length greater than or equal to 8 meters and a height greater than or equal to 2 meters.

But this is logical in view of the technical constraints imposed by the regulations on vehicle type discrimination. At least 90% of heavy goods vehicles must be discriminated against in the PL category but at the same time up to 10% of light vehicles can be discriminated against in the PL category. So on a road with traffic of 3000 PL per day, the radar can flasher like a truck up to 300 light vehicles !!
