Disaster
So I have been losing a little coolant now for a while, think I have found it...

The coolant drops are hanging on the head around the 3rd or 4th cylinders, so I can only think its the dreaded cracked head. I shall remove the exhaust manifold at the weekend.

Has anyone else experienced this and what route did they go down to fix it, I see there are some redesigned castings. Is there a preferable type to use to do the best fix? I foresee myself keeping my Defender for quite a while.

I will be doing the repair myself only need the parts.

Dam, was going to get her remapped soon too Sad

Is there a core plug/bolt thing that sticks out at the front of the head, exhaust manifold side??????????

Just after I brought mine it leaked along the exhaust manifold, and was an easy fix, warranty

OK, thanks Andy. I will definitely be diagnosing this 100% befor removing and replacing the head. Will look into that.

Just thinking though is that it has been sat still for about 5 days.

Forgot to add it is a year 2000 with 100k on.

Here is a pic and it shows a core plug thing on the side of the head, and this one has also been leaking

Also check the top hose fitting, had a mates one where the hose clip had corroded through

Thanks again. I guess all will become clear once the manifold is off. I have some nice stainless steel hose clips in the garage Smile

This is a well-known leak hot spot on the TD5 - my Disco 2 has been weeping slightly from here for 5 years and 100k miles and all I have done is top up the coolant once a month or so. It's on the list of jobs to get round to when time permits, and has been for 5 years! If the leak is not too bad, I wouldn't worry overmuch about it.

Really useful photo by the way, thanks Andy!

Turner Engineering put on stronger heads which are imported from Spain onto their remanufactured TD5 engines. Cracked heads are especially common on re-mapped engines apparently! Should be able to buy one from them Thumbs Up

I waited til the end of the month and as my tax has run out and have sorn until April.

Took a few bits off yesterday and Landy Andy was spot on Thumbs Up it is the threaded core plug, and surprisingly it is loose!

Going out now (in the rain) to remove the head, I want to check the dowels and also 3 exhaust studs were already broken. The plan there is to helicoil the exhaust stud holes and fit long bolts and spacers, also drill out the outer stud holes in the manifold. Skim the manifold but not remove the webbing.

I may also give the cooling system a complete overhaul, new radiator/w-pump and maybe new pipes. The top hose adapter on the head is also showing signs of corrosion.

Maybe some photos later.

I had the gasket go in my disco 2 and the garage was talking about the new reinforced heads from Spain. They are the same people that reinforced the v8 Heads. Russell

100k on my year 2000, I guess it woul have gone for much longer if I wasn't determined to find the water leak.

Anyone else have to top up there water? I was putting about 200ml every other month

Not yet Steve.....but wife's mate is putting a similar amount in her Disco 2. I'll have a look at the core plug next time I'm round her house. Thumbs Up Only Alcohol Can Save me Now

Yup, like I said earlier in the thread, I have been adding a teacupful a month for the last five years or so to my Disco 2.

It's an '02 with 200k miles, by the way, so I win! Very Happy
