Rear Axle/Hub Oil Leak
The face of my offside rear wheel has traces of oil on it. Again.

I have inspected and it is weeping from the "Hub cap" and "Flange-driving shaft joint" (part 17 & 18 on the diagram below)

I paid for this leak to be sorted a few months ago and it looks to have been sealed with instant gasket. The hub cap is also split.

My question is: Is it just the "Drive member gasket" (2) and hub cap (17) that need replacing? Or do I need to go deeper and replace "Gasket-stub axle" (4), "Seal-stub axle,Inner" (6), "Hub inner seal" (9)

I have also read to check the breathers are not blocked

Thanks!

Disclaimer: I've not done mine yet but need to get round to it soon...

It's my understanding that it's the stub axle seal (6) that you need to replace, as that's the one (that should be) keeping the diff oil inside the axle. The hub inner seal (9) is to keep dirt and water out of the bearings.

Thanks. I was hoping to get away with a quick 'external' job but seems it'll need a strip down... I will get the parts ordered

Whilst you are down there check that the axle breather is not blocked or kinked. If this does become non-functioning the increased air pressure within the axle can (and does) force warm oil out of the weakest seal. In your case the offside rear side.

If there is a problem it will either be at the banjo bolt end (which has a small vent hole that is easily blocked) or the open end of the pipe under the nearside wheel arch (this can be blocked by mud or waxoyl etc.).

Since you are taking your hub off make sure you have the correct hub nut socket and a spare nut. You will also need a torque wrench for this job, threadlock, gaskets and or instant gasket (whichever is your preference).

Check the wear of your brake discs before you order anything, if they are more than 3/4 worn you might as well replace them (and the pads) whilst you are in there. Save you taking off the hubs again a little further down the road.
