Replacing Rear Diff Oil Seal on a Salisbury Diff
my rear diff is leaking from the oil seal on the rear diff on my 110 300TDi SW, from previous knowledge of the vehicle the oil seal has been replaced several times in the past, so I think now is the time to fit a later style oil seal and differential flange.

I cannot confirm if the current installation has been fettled with or adjusted, so when fitting a new flange and seal - how tight should the nut be done up ?, there is a 'crush' tube on the pinion gear?, do I ned to replace this as well ??

Any helpful suggestions welcomed !

i think you leave the crush tube!. mark the nut and count how many turns to get it off. then when you re-tighten, turn it same number of time and that should be it.
someone with actual experience of doing it should be along shortly to confirm! Thumbs Up My 109 thread

This of course assumes that the curent 'nut' was put back in place correctly !

I have a lot of free play before the rear diff moves any rear wheel.....

If you are unsure, it might well be worth replacing the crush tube and torqueing the nut according to the workshop manual procedure.

That way you wont end up reassembling it to match previous other mistakes.

I have never seen a Salisbury diff which did not have quite a substantial amount of backlash however.
