Just reading somewhere els that someone had an ABS light staying on.
Mine stays on for about 2 min of driving then dissapears.
Is this normal or should I get it checked out?

Dealer told me it should remain on for about 30 seconds after starting and moving off and then turn itself off.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it went off once you got above a certain speed after driving off. Say 10kph or so.

Yes, I think you need to be moving for the light to turn off.

Doesn't the handbook say anything?
My TD5 book says after reaching 5mph.

the ABS light should extinguish once it has completed it's own system check and breeched 5 mph.
If u drive at 4 mph all day itshould stay on !

In theory any way ! DEFENDER XS CSW 08 TONGA GREEN

In my experience, the ABS light remains on if you start up and then reverse, but once you move forward, after a few wheel revolutions it goes off. I don't think there is a simple timeout - I guess the electronics are looking for so many clicks from the wheel sensor in forward motion.

I wonder if the ABS works when reversing ? Trevor Wright

The ABS light will remain illuminated untill you exceed abbout 20 Km p/h. If you idle it will stay on. As soon as you reach +- 20 km p/h it should switch off.

This maybe similar. The ABS warning light on a BMW motorbike does not extinguish until the system has undertaken a self test which requires rotation of the wheels for a few yards. I expect a similar system operates on the Defender.

Also some ABS systems don’t modulate the brakes at less than 5 mph (which may be the case with the Defender?) and therefore it is necessary to exceed or reach this speed for the diagnosis to be run.

BMW may run this self test because of a number of fatalities caused by ABS servo failures which reduced the braking capacity of the bike by about 50%, although the latest bikes are now non servo systems. Maybe there is a greater risk of loss of control as a Defender might be parked/stopped in an off road position or with a heavy trailer where ABS might be relied upon, and thus the light is warning to proceed slowly until the test is completed.

It’s dissappointing that the manual supplied with the vehicle has next to nothing about the operation of the ABS or Traction Control.
