What reverse camera angle to simulate rear view mirror?
I plan to get a reversing camera and use it (for parking, obvisously, but also) as a rear view mirror and was wondering what camera angle I'd best get. For reversing/parking, 120 degrees seems common, but I fear this makes distant objects (like traffic coming from behind) hard to see when using the camera and screen as a rear view mirror. Anybody experience with this? Would 90 degrees be OK, or better even less? Thanks! Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Ok so no one then?

Perhaps I should add that on my HCPU, the rear view mirror is often useless because the view is obstructed by the load in the tub. Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

On my D3 I have a reverse cam built into one of the number plate lights, I couldn't tell you what angle it is however it does over lay a grid system over the image to allow you to get distances, might be worth asking different companies if this feature is included on their system. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

I have a camera, all I can offer is no one angle is great on the defender. So think about the view that's useful. I went for close up around the rear eg for hitching etc...but it's not got the long range rear view Mike

Well you have answered your own question then Thumbs Up

Incidentally from experience with a number of motorhomes, you probably want to keep you reversing mirror and i suggest you look there at the cameras on offer - i had a great sony one, to simulate the mirror, but im not sure i would fit that on the defender Mike

Thanks, but no I didn't. The question is "what camera angle?". I know 120° is too wide, but is 90° ok, or should it be even less? There's plenty of cameras on ebay, but none in a shop in my area where I'd be able to try different angles. So, if I buy from eg ebay, what field of view angle should I get to avoid trial and error and having to send back items, with obvious cost and a waste of time... Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

Camera viewing angle doesn't dictate depth Wink and therefore how much rearward you will see. (i had a 120 or 170 as a sole rear look camera Thumbs Up )

You wont get as good an image as a mirror regardless and there are some additional factors to consider like sun etc...

So my first point still applies - think about what you want the image for.

basically there are only 3 locations to install a camera - Rear roof area (back top or corner), number plate area or cross member area

then consider you camera mounting angle and the type of camera, it will be a compromise. Consider the screen you will use.

Thats all before the type of camera and screen

When you get into it - you will see what i meant about considering what you want to see

You could get something like this

http://www.parkingcameras.com/store/produc...amp;page=1, great camera - in the cross member maybe - still 120 degrees but not without challenge when in use - which i could explain if you need?

And your problem is why they invented this:

I can't give a definite answer, as I've never applied the theory, but I do know that a 45mm lens on a full frame camera is roughly equal to a human eye's focal length (this is highly arguable however), and objects appear roughly the same size through the lens as they do in front you the person. However, this would limit your peripheral view too much.

Personally I would aim for a camera with a 100 degree field of vision as this should give you a good viewable area whilst maintaining scalability similar to a rearview mirror.

HOWEVER, this is all back of a napkin theory, I really don't know how well this would work in real life!

The image below gives a rough guide:

the problem with these cameras start from their quality and end quickly into the screen quality - i personally wouldnt compare it anything like real camera lens

another point - they measure eitherside of the centreline istr so 90 is 45 each side - you probably want 60each side so 120 - depending on location Mike

Completely agree, they're not similar in quality, but a focal length is a focal length Smile Not an owner... yet!

This is the type of camera you would need to install for the intended use:

As mentioned by 4ndy, the +/- 45mm equivalent focal length is what you need to get a long range view behind the vehicle. Peter,

For rear view mirror replacement you need different camera (angle and pointing) than for reversing.
For reversing you need to look down to the earth +-10cm behind the car. I have a rear looking camera on Disco2 - it works, but it is not perfect for mirror replacement nor for reversing. Future plan is to switch to 2 separate cameras - on for rear looking and one for reversing. 3,5" LCD placed over the standard mirror inside has switch for two cameras. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
