Puma 2008 - winter and indicators
Hi

Has anyone found a common cause for the indicators working sporadically in the winter - Since it got cold they just sort of - not work. Then after say 10 minutes since starting the ignition and driving a while (or switching the hazard lights on) they magically work.

I only ask as I am mid replacing a windscreen jet washer that flew off about 150 miles ago. (yes fingers / arms / eyeballs are now dislocated), so I currently have the dash hanging by a couple of loose clips so thought a good time to check this over.

Should the indicators completely not work if the hazard switch is unplugged ?? I doubt it. But hey..

Did anyone else suffer intermittent indicators in previous winters on the Puma 2.4 110 (2008) - Did they find a fix - or was it a complete rewire job?

I would run a check on the relay - if I could find a OWM manual that was available (have rung around everywhere - my local parts shop phoned Haynes and got the answer there are no plans for one - then I thought Ford Transit - but no they seem to be equally illusive).

Help and abuse accepted, and not necessarily agreed with

Derrin

Hi Derrin

Welcome to the forum Thumbs Up

Bit of a strange problem you have with the indicators. I think my first check would be to remove the units and make sure the bulb holders etc are clean and no corrosion. After that pull the relay, in the fuse panel under the steering wheel and top left, and make sure the contacts are clean etc. Might be worth getting a replacement, not very expensive, and trying that.

If you were closer I have a working relay and set of indicators I have just removed that we could try.

Thanks for welcome and quick replies
Thank you Bob - I will try the relay - how did you get a map of the relays or did you learn through experimentation (ref no OWM) The bulb units are fine - it is an all or nothing issue - even the internal green lamps don't light and no clicking when using the indicator stalk - I did check the relay (Checked them all) - the connectors are clean

Mk1collector - good idea on the tow point - thanks - I will check in daylight - this sounds highly plausible

Under the drivers side rear wheel arch there is a grey plug to disconnect the tow electrics which should let you know if it's the problem and if not just plug it back in. Thumbs Up

Follow this link for the 2.2. Where you see 'MY12-on' at the top left click on 'workshop' to the right and the you will see the 2.4 manuals.

Thanks DG Thumbs Up

Ahhh I seem to have the same problem.

My intermittent indicator issue started a week ago.

I have replaced the hazard switch.
Looked for damaged wires.
Examined the indicator stalk.
Cleaned the tow pack.
Cleaned and checked all indicators.

Pulled out hair!!!

Just ordered a new relay - if this doesn't work - I'll take it to the garage.

Any suggestions??

Pete

Not sure if any help or not but the indicators will not work if hazard lightswitch is removed. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Is it possible to have an intermittent relay switch i.e. Sometimes it works for 4 flashes before it stops - other times it (hazard/indicators) simply don't flash?

Confused ..

Relays can become faulty.
Could also be earthing issues.. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

What's the best way to check for earthing problems - (sorry I'm a novice - hence the question)...

My Disco2 had indentical symptoms to this when it was new, the indicators simply didn't work in the first winter I had it until the interior of the car had warmed up thoroughly. In the end I removed the indicator stalk switch, cleaned off all the lubricant that had been plastered over the moving parts in the switch factory, and relubricated with a suitable lubricant.

In the 14 years since I haven't had a recurrence of the problem.

^^^^ That sounds entirely feasible, LR at times did do the most odd things especially with grease.

Earthing, continuity testing fir earthing is best with a multimeter.
As always disconnect battery first for safety's sake.

Ideally you need a wiring diagram to I.D. the colours.

Might be worth checking you main earth leads underneath too, especially if you've had transfer box or gearbox / clutch out recently. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I had indicator problems (the RHS indicators would periodically stay switched on even with the keys out etc), and it turned out to be chafing wiring under the RHS wing (it's a MY09 110). It was generally okay when it was dry/warm, but the problem always cropped up when it was cold and wet.

Replaced the wiring and all fine now.

So, I have now replaced the relay switch - and the lights and hazards are working fine....only problem now is the "clicking" noise has disappeared. Any thoughts?
