Thinking about fitting a large Intercooler to my TD5
Hi iv been looking at fitting a larger intercooler to my defender td5 . I have a alive stage ono map. Will it be ok to fit a larger intercooler with this map or would i need to have it remap again as it will have more air flowing thought the intercooler.

also has any ono used TD5 inside on here

Thanks

I don't think you need a new remap. The ECU is measuring the Manifold presure and temperature and also the airflow. So it knows how much air is going in. When you fit a larger intercooler the air will be cooler so the ecu knows that there is more air going in so it knows it can inject more fuel.

You can get more power out off the Td5 engine but that is another story.

I use a standard intercooler and according to my Nanocom my inlet temp doesn't get higher then 55 deg C that is 328 Kelvin

If you would be able to cool it down to 30 C which is very optimistic I think. you get 7% more air in your cylinders so you could have 10 HP more. Mr. Green Roel

Is there any point fitting an uprated intercooler to a standard TD5?

Not unless you tow or use it in hotter ambient temperatures other than the UK. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

If you fit a larger intercooler, you will need a larger turbo to see the effects at lower rpm.

There's a slight drop in the performance at about 1100 rpm, as you are trying to fill a larger space with air.

If you are not intending on changing the turbo, you can shorten the waste gate rod.

I've done each of the mod piece by piece so that i know the change effects.

stock map
change to 1.222 t-box
write a map
Turbo waste gate shorten
remap again
change intercooler
remap again
changed turbo to vnt
remap again

i didn't push the engine as it's aging and i'm not for milking all the power gains, i'm after an easy drive and better acceleration. it happened over 5 to 7 yrs as much as my pockets could afford. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.
